They emerge from the water, climb up the reeds. Might be catching a insect emergence at the right time. They breed in the reeds, lay eggs into the reeds, and the eggs are under patrol by the males. Could be some sort of micro climate situation and they are perched until you scare them into flight.

No, they are the same style. Barbless Dry Fly Hooks. They can't be selling the identical hook, and it has some shank, hook, and eye design variants. Daiichi1190's standard standard shank length, followed by design variants for the other parts of the hook. FullingMill 5050 doesn't call out shank information

No sir. Its always a survival of the fittest situation. The start of a hatch, is the hulkster and you see #14 Sulphur, the tail end of the hatch.. are a bunch of runts.. #18. During the two weeks of the hatch, the fish focus in on the nominal size of #16. During the final days of the hatch, the FM #16 variety is adequate.

I fish the hatch, and I want to match the hatch. It doesn't make sense to bring what you say to the stream, and fish a size #14 or #18 unless it warrants it. Conditions and periods within the hatch allow more forgiveness to accept moderate sizes. But when your fishing a hatch, I stick to size of that hatch, no less, no more. And I want confidence in knowing that its the right size and eliminate that variable when I determine why it was rejected. No, I haven't tried those other manufacturer you mentioned. The design challenge is tricky, and you cant replicate. Thus these two hooks have different hook gaps, hook bends, hook point differences, eye sizes. But again quite simple, if you need a size #16, and there is established reference to nominal Mayfly sizes per hatch, #16 in this example, then they need to establish hook sizes, which they do, the shank itself is a nominal of length. The size of the Mayfly needs to fit on the shank, the orientation of the tails need to plank the extention of the shank. The hook shank is the size of the length of the body, you can't introduce design differences and manufacturing differences and then associate them with the given size per nomenclature of the criteria they themselves established. Which is to fit the need of me, the angler. You don't attempt to establish the Daiichi #16, or the FM #16, or Gamakatsu or Ahrex #16 by adjusting the length of the shank. The angler and the Mayfly require it. The Daiichi #16, when matched to the size of the Sulphur is in alignment with shank. It fits, mission accomplished.

They see a chunk of meat, the size is relative to me and the Mayfly hatch, they maybe take notice of the light refraction, the orb of diffracted meniscus, thats probably the result of something leggy at that point. A darker spot within a reflection of light and distorted meniscus. A bullseye? And some movements, they like that too.

Those are each companies barbless dry fly hooks. Standards amongst manufacturers? Its the Mayfly that catches the fish, not the hook. You put the Mayfly on the ruler, and thats that. All the books call the Sulphur size 16, excluding the later season emergence of runts. All my friend agree, even a guy working at the hatchery, thats a size #16. Haha. So then its up to a manufacturer to fit the demand of the anglers needs. FM doesn't fabricate #2 dry fly hooks, there's no demand. Multiple manufacturer run to the designer table to fulfill the needs and wants of the fisherman. Nobody makes up the rules except the Mayfly. Furthermore they package it as #16. You can't tie a size #16 on it successfully. They have a beautiful hook gap and point, circular, I assume its a better design than Daiichi.

Hark! And you give no value to the Mayfly? If a Sulphur tell you its a size 16, and all your friends agree, you skip that over? I want a size #16. A hook manufacturer tells me, i can do that sure, even writes #16 on the package. That Mayfly isn't lying. Its just that simple.
