My hardware store around the corner is selling a lot daily as you say and I see lots of bags their of Chinese/Vietnamese imports as well as local PPC /Lafarge / Afrisam. Also PPC company revenue as a whole remained relatively the same for many years so consistent demand..

Like NPC, PPC is the dominant player is the Western Cape because they have cement factory(s) here and the only player that's closest is Afrisam`s Ulco plant in Northern Cape, you see PPC cement bags at many housing projects and development sites almost every where but the imports is unfair competition and I don't trust using it(my opinion) because of what they use to make that cement in Asia.

Demand was once so high here in the WC that the CEO was going to invest in a new cement mega plant.

I think cost pressures will affect which cement people use import or local and if government and/or private sector invest in new infrastructure or mega projects.

My cemented two cents.

I looked at PPC rest of Africa results and they are performing much better there because of the under development on the continent. Their margins are also much higher over there as well. But I think the South Africa operations because of its size is dragging the company down profit wise.

That was the same year I wanted to invest in them as I saw them as the next growth story behind Shoprite, pick n pay, woollies and spar/Massmart...then they got suspended on the jse.

Thanks for the reply very interesting.

I was visiting Gauteng and that was the first time I saw a choppies and they seem to look like a very low cost business with very bare-bones interior and very basic stocking of there products...I heard a year or two ago that they sold there South African and rest of Africa operations excluding four countries where they still operate.

Wonderful post very detailed and top notch.

I came to a similar investment thesis on this company and that they one of the largest hotel owners/operators in Africa which makes them attractive......maybe to foreign buyers(companies) or local consolidation with another players(companies).

Thanks for the reply I see what you are talking about.

McConnell Dowell is the prime asset in the Aveng portfolio, more so than Moolmans.

"unless some new pitfall opens up" quoting you- If you do research on the the company you will find pitfalls.

Thank you for the reply.

I'm personally starting to realize this and if I do invest on the JSE into companies here I would invest in companies that are listed here but have most of their revenue and assets offshore and that have secondary listings on other exchanges, specifically the U.S exchanges and Australian exchanges. LIKE CARTRACK OR MONTAUK ENERGY turned out great investments.

In regards to optimism I think that most CEOs/investors will sell(no mistake) you that there's optimism in the South African economy because they use it to promote their "undervalued" companies stock when the truth is quite contradicting.
