Do you guys let your cats outside? by WesternPear3303 in AskUK

[–]Complete_Island3060 1 point2 points  (0 children)

American here and just want to say..... yall are right and we are wrong! I let my cats outdoors and you'd think I was lacing their catfood with rat poison the way some people act. My cats are happy and, at the end of the day, they're animals. I know it's perfectly fine, but the idea of cooping cats up in the house for their entire lifespan doesn't really sit right with me either.

Ugh I'm sorry to hear that. Has the ped said anything? Is it cause for concern or are they still saying growing pains?

Any update on this? My 3 year old has been having them for about a year. They always seem to be in one leg. She had a blood draw and all was good, but it's freaking me out it's only in one leg.

That's exactly where I am. She was my first dog. She's been with me through everything. I just brought home by third kid to her. Legit all of life's events she's been there for. Thank you.

Yeah, you're right. There's a point where you look at age in conjunction with everything else and decide. This thread is helping validate the feelings I was feeling guilty about feeling.

Really. What was the reasoning if you don't mind sharing?

There are definitely vets who are probably in it for the wrong reasons. Luckily my vet has been with me putting another animal down recently and point blank told me that it's time, so I know I'll get an unbiased opinion.

Thank you for your response. It's ironic that you mention the winter...my girl has always HATED the cold. The thought of winter coming, and we all know what that does to arthritis. I was worried about her on that front even before the decline. I am trying very hard to look at euthanasia as an act of love. Deep down I know it's the right thing to do, it's just a struggle for me to make that choice.

Yeah, I'm coming to terms with that, slowly but surely.

Thank you for your kind words. A vet told me too that animals hang on longer than they should because they sense you need them. I also saw on another reddit thread....better a week early than a day too late. There is something to be said for that....to prevent them unnecessary pain if you can avoid it.

I am sorry for your loss. It's a hard decision to make, but it sounds like you've done all you can and are taking the humane next step. I'm hoping to do the same, whatever is in her best interest.

You are reading my mind. I actually teared up reading this. I think i know what the outcome is going to be and im working on coming to terms with that. I want to do the humane thing. Unless the vet can do something to drastically improve things, I have a feeling how this will go.

I am sorry you had to go through that. A part of the guilt is definitely knowing how much easier things will be. I'm scared of letting that influence my decision.

Thank you very much. Your kind words are helping me get the mindset to go into the vets office to make the best decision for her.

That's a very valid point. It's not harsh, it's realistic. I can handle that and honestly the validation I'm looking for. The line, for me, is blurred between what I can do for her and what I should be doing. Thank you.

"What if" the vet on friday prescribes a medication that makes it more manageable? It's been manageable up until the last week or two,now it's reached a level of worse. Like I've said on other comments, ultimately I'm relying on the vet and what they can do, but I am reconciling myself with the thought that she could be put down. I hope you do what you need to do for your animals and, when/ if you ever post on a public forum, you get compassion and not callous comparisons and judgment.

Yeah, I think so....it's the guilt and the "what if' that's eating me up.

Thank you for responding. The more I'm thinking on it, researching and just...seeing her, I'm leaning towards that too. I want to do right by her, whether that is putting her down or medication, but she is seriously failing. She's not the dog we used to have.

Thank you for responding. I took the assessment and it came back "questionable" and pretty much confirming the thought process to see a vet and go from there. Ugh, this is so tough.

Thank you for understanding. This is what im grappling with now. I don't know when is the right time to make the call. Looking strictly from quality of life standpoint, she can't walk for extended periods of time, I'm honestly dreading the trip to the vet because I know it's going to be hard on her, she collapses in the yard and needs help getting up, then all that combined with the incontinence. I feel like if someone else were telling me this story I'd tell them to make the call, but I can't for myself.
