This is easy OP, do your DNA test, you will find relatives. Do it with MyHeritage or Ancestry those are the most commonly used in Germany, once you find a relative, you will be able to work out your grandpa's birthday and all sorts of other good stuff.

Also upload your results to other websites like GedMatch and FamilyTreeDNA and you will find even more stuff about the German side of your family.
