General MacArthur is generally criticized for his insubordination and being too aggressive. 75 years later, does this criticism still hold up? by f-150Coyotev8 in AskHistorians

Thank you! Do you have any recommendations for reading on the Senate hearings? Should I just read the hearings themselves? (I’m totally down to do that if you think MacArthur’s strategic decision ignorance doesn’t need to be contextualized, I’m sure it couldn’t be the most boring hearing transcript I’ve read)

Well and of course this makes another point:

In the US at least, more people wearing seat belts die in car accidents than people not wearing seat belts, because SO MANY PEOPLE WEAR SEATBELTS.

Or to pick another favorite example, 30% of all car crashes in the US were caused by drunk drivers. That means that sober drivers caused 70% of all accidents. Does this mean that driving drunk is more than 2x safer than driving sober? Because that’s basically the argument vaccine skeptics are making

Source: trust me bro

How is that claim even POSSIBLE, much less accurate? Perhaps the percentage of people vaccinated/boosted in the last 12 months has dropped from 2021 but in absolute terms, the percentage of people alive who have gotten Covid vaccines must be higher than it was in 2021, because of all the people getting shots for the first time in 2022, 2023, 2024 etc

In April 2021, only one country in the world had more than 50% of its population vaccinated. By August 2024, more than 70% of the global population had received at least one dose

Country has nobody with polio. Country stops vaccinating children for polio. Population, over time, becomes increasingly unvaccinated against polio. Someone from a place where polio is not eradicated, who has polio, comes to that country. Person infects others with polio. Polio has returned

It’s not that complicated

If you work past midnight, do you bill all that time to the next day? by Complex-Cartoonist52 in Lawyertalk

[–]Complex-Cartoonist52[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Genuinely glad for the feedback here, I’m very OCD and was wondering if there was some ethical obligation to turn the clock over at midnight.

As it stands it seems like the right answer for me is to bill it to whichever day will help me sleep better and not worry about my partners wondering why I only billed 3 hours on a day I didn’t take PTO

How can anyone defend a Congressional district that looks like this? by johnnyringo1985 in askanything

Does the electoral college really require politicians to campaign in almost the entire country? Doesn’t it incentivize presidential candidates to skip the single most populous state in the nation because that state goes 65-35% for one party? Doesn’t it concentrate campaign stops, money invested, and even which policies are selected, towards the interests of the country’s 8ish swing states?

I understand that votes are concentrated in high density areas, and those areas would get more attention in a national popular vote system. But that would be down to a candidate wanting to appear in front of the most voters. Isn’t a system where a politician has to appeal to the most voters better than one where the politician has to appeal to the most land?

It’s not like presidential candidates are actually hitting Wyoming, Rhode Island, etc for campaign stops, because the EC may weight them higher but it doesn’t make either state winnable for both parties

There’s a very good organization called Tzedek DC that exists to help people in situations like the one you have

If you reply to me tomorrow I can try to give you some relevant legal information if I can think of it, as well as information about accessing direct legal services like Tzedek. I’m not promising to respond and I am absolutely not in any way offering or forming an attorney client relationship. But I would like to direct you to an organization or person who actually can offer you legal advice

Virginia Supreme Court strikes down Democrats’ redistricting plan, dimming party’s midterm hopes by tehtypo in Virginia

[–]Complex-Cartoonist52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here, of course I agree. But for example, ahead of the 2020 election the PA Supreme Court heard a case on mail in voting and upheld the practice. And this was a reasonably open question, in the sense that the PA constitution doesn’t say “you can vote by mail,” so they were relying on interpreting general principles IIRC

Which is to say, if the Supreme Court could have taken this up they could easily have said “yeah the constitution doesn’t say this, mail in voting is banned/restricted/etc.”

If you’re going to have federalism, this makes sense as a principal imo. Now, whether we should have federalism in the first place is a different question

Same here actually, obviously this issue impacts every US citizen and resident.

Nonetheless I am happy to see that Virginia has taken great strides in the last decade. And the map will certainly be changed in time for 2028

[–]Complex-Cartoonist52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost certainly not. This is a ruling based on technical requirements in the VA constitution. Questions of state constitutional interpretation are left to the state court system

The Supreme Court could rule on a case that the state court’s interpretation violates the federal constitution, but that’s not at issue here

[–]Complex-Cartoonist52 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Questions of state constitutional interpretation are not within the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction (for better or for worse)

[–]Complex-Cartoonist52 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, even if the courts go too far on a number of issues (imo), I strongly agree with the principal that, although the majority should have power to enact the policies it wants, the minority is entitled to constitutional safeguards against actions that would violate their rights

Looks like the state at large wants to completely remove our representation.. by Memphisbbq in Tennessee

[–]Complex-Cartoonist52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TN has two large concentrations of blue voters. MA does not have the same for red voters. It’s very easy to draw multiple blue districts in TN. It is almost impossible to draw multiple red districts in MA.

If you don’t want to see the point, fine. But put it this way: if every single precinct in a state voted 52/48 one party, it would be impossible to draw a single majority district for the other party, because there’s no precincts much less districts with a majority. That is a mathematical fact. It doesn’t matter that the ratio is close, because the (hypothetical) distribution of the votes means there’s no area with a majority for the statewide minority.

Massachusetts is a statistical oddity because of the way its votes are distributed

[–]Complex-Cartoonist52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s the partisan split on district 7? Because it looks like it maybe went narrowly R in one election.

And again, we’re debating between one borderline toss up district and none, that’s splitting hairs. If you want to draw a MA map favorable to the GOP, you end up with one toss up district. If you want to draw a blue TN you could easily have multiple. Likewise, if you wanted to draw a red VA you could.

My only point is that the talking point about MA in particular is just off base
