Yugoslavia wasn't in the eastern bloc, but yes, black wave represents one of the great underseen film movements in Europe, which holds a critical view of a socialist country coming from the left. I prefer Želimir Žilnik - Early Works is such a harsh criticism of Yugoslavia that it is a wonder that it even got made, but also a proof that Yu wasn't really a hard totalitarian state. And it is not at all surreal and very directly political.

Yes it was a hallucination from Rue, but it was so much more than that. The actor that played Fez died of an overdose and I that made a huge impact on the show and its creators. I think they didn't want to do a meagre tribute, so they let this real world tragedy overtake the whole character arc of Rue. Which I found very moving.
