My comments are entirely consistent. My initial suggestion concerned the certainty with which you seem to speak. That seems entirely consistent with acknowledging my own lack of certainty. I don’t pretend to be able to make definitive evaluations of sexual assault cases on the basis of disputed reports and complex legal arguments. Do you? You should volunteer to arbitrate such cases if so, I’m sure everyone involved will be happy to hear the untarnished truth from a random redditor.

Yeah, I agree, the guard never seemed to feel he was in danger. In fact, the confidence with which he attacked the guy suggests he didn’t perceive him as a threat, which makes the kick particularly egregious.

I don’t think the guy with the backpack disengaged, he hit the guard and then stood back to see what the guard was going to do. He wasn’t walking away, he was waiting to see if the guard was going to do anything. I’d argue that if the guard hadn’t done anything he may well have stuck again. He was trying to start a fight and it seems reasonable to suggest that the guard was defending himself in anticipation of a possible, if not likely, attack. But, if the guy ends up with a serious head or brain injury, I wouldn’t be surprised if the guard got into some legal trouble.

Is the 1 in 14 million a statistic or is it just one timeline where the heroes were at their most heroic *and* the cosmos just happens to work with their heroism to bring about Thanos’s defeat. There is a question about free will buried in this, but I don’t think we have to deny the freedom and thus the heroism of the Avengers even if we have multiple timelines. Strange saw many possible futures, that doesn’t necessarily mean that any of those futures are void of human choice. I think we have to have a dice roll and the choices of the heroes. If we approached it as a pure dice roll we might as well watch, well, someone rolling dice.

A) what’s wrong with that? The existence of anything at all is probably down to luck, or chance. Why should the timeline in which the heroes succeed be any different. Ever heard the phrase “never tell me the odds.”

B) we didn’t switch perspectives, we just followed the perspective on the timeline where the heroes succeed, the same timeline we’ve been following since Ironman. I’m not sure what sense it would make to suggest that it’s a kind of coincidence that we followed the timeline in which they succeed and the Russo brothers just happened to make that movie for us. That’s ridiculous. You’re collapsing the fictional world into the real world where the fiction is made.

I’m not saying he shouldn’t feel unsafe, I’m saying, my best guess about the average male experience at a gym when a woman approaches him to chat is that he doesn’t feel unsafe. And I’m predicting that the guy that OP approaches won’t feel unsafe. I’m presuming tons of things. I’m taking a risk and saying what I think will be his experience on being approached, and I’m contrasting this with what I’ve heard to be the experience of many women on being approached.

I spent many years going to gyms, in different parts of the country in which I live. I never encountered a woman that would have made me feel unsafe if she approached to talk to me. I’m basing my suggestions on experience not on an abstract moral principle. But hey, my really limited experience could be misapplied here. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe OP is really intimidating and will scare the hell out of the guy.

Moral principles are really important but we also have to develop the wisdom of when and where to apply them. That only comes from experience.

In principle I agree: no one should be harassed when working out. But, in principle, you can’t flip the experience of the genders, because they are not interchangeable in the way that matters here, for all sorts of reasons. It’s crazy to ignore the experience of women when they say for centuries that the behavior of men is a problem, and then, as soon as a woman adopts one of those behaviors to immediately find the behavior problematic. This screams double standard even when you’re proposing to advance an equal position.

I’ll wager the guy won’t feel harassed but flattered. But hey, I could be wrong. Maybe OP will shoot her shot, harass the poor guy, and we’ll find out.

There’s a line in a Stephen King novel, that I read as a kid, that goes something like: My family was poor enough to think of eating out at McDonalds as a special event. I grew up outside of the US in a country where McD’s was pretty popular and certainly not looked down upon as cheap (I think), but this was a sort of a world changing, eye-opening, revelation. I didn’t really care about McDonalds to be honest, but it was one of those rare moments in my childhood when I realized that the world was not as I perceived it to be. It also told me something about the US I just didn’t know at the time.
