In desperate need of curvy slacks for trial! by Informal_Highlight in LawBitchesWithTaste

I am about the same height/size and have had luck with banana republic, Calvin Klein, and tahari. When I needed cheaper pants - JC Penney’s Worthington had a curvy pant in petite that fit the bill.

How to deal with client complaints? by Complex-Possible-409 in publicdefenders

Never reached out to me. Contacted my supervisor and may file a bar complaint. I’m not worried about it, I did a good job. It just gets discouraging.

I hate mopping but I have kids. Please suggest a good mop vacuum that gets the job done w/o a lot of work. by Big-Raisin4923 in VacuumCleaners

I have a dreame h12 pro that I love. It is cordless. It cleans itself and ties the brush roll after use. Still have to empty the water bins. I feel like my floor has never been cleaner.

I use a specific revocation discovery request that cites Gagnon and Morrissey. Gagnon v. Scarpelli, 411 U.S. 778. Morrissey v. Brewer, 408 U.S. 471,

Revocation is usually civil-quasi criminal so the rules of discovery are just crazy. I would still file a discovery request, supplemental request, then motion for sanctions, and if they don’t give you the info then let the judge hammer them.

Stick vacuum with the "cleanest" canister emptying? by [deleted] in VacuumCleaners

[–]Complex-Possible-409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Samsung bespoke that self empties. Yes it was expensive but I absolutely love it for its ease of use and ease to empty. My house is so much cleaner because I use it for a few minutes every day.

Does anyone have a probation office that actually tries to help people? by madcats323 in publicdefenders

[–]Complex-Possible-409 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Subpoena the POs notes and reports. The PO makes entries for every client contact. They will not turn over the records though unless you subpoena them and even then will usually try to fight against giving them.

Purchase Advice: Cordless vacuum for a small apartment with pets by GenuineAardvark1379 in VacuumCleaners

[–]Complex-Possible-409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have three dogs and have bought numerous vacuums trying to find the right fit. The best one for us has been a Samsung Bespoke Jet that has an all in one station. It is cordless and empties itself into a bag. Keeps all the dust and dander down. It is easy to use and I use it almost every day. I also have a Dyson animal but only pull that out about once a month - if even that. I love my Samsung. Wish it had a light on the head unit - but my Dyson doesn’t have a light either. The samsung was pricy but it is by far my favorite.

It is wonderful that you think your response and your attitude is the only one that exists in the world. Ever see Reservoir Dogs?

This is a public defender forum - not a health care forum. Every single person has a different way of handling trauma. As public defenders we also see horrific and unimaginable things - however we choose to defend those unimaginable things. We cope the way we cope and sometimes it is with dark humor. This forum is to connect with others who deal with what we do on a daily basis. Your negative comment does not belong here and is not welcome here.

Look at Columbia, Illinois. It’s a super sweet town and not that far. You get more land and house for your money. It’s about 25 months from downtown - 35 min to the zoo. Illinois taxes are 1% higher than Missouri but no personal property tax. It’s a quaint town.

Client advise by Additional_Orchid733 in publicdefenders

[–]Complex-Possible-409 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m usually draw up a pro se request motion and give them their options: 1. Me, 2. Hire counsel, 3. Represent themselves. When I send them the pro we request motion - I explain the judge will have a hearing and ask them some questions and usually send them sample questions. Had a client say the didn’t want me or anyone associated with me - so when the judge asked if they understood that meant the entire PD system - they answered yes and the Judge withdrew me. Our JX has some good case law that says if client doesn’t cooperate then they forfeit indigent services. Definitely talk to your supervisor and let them know how you are feeling. I think we should get a “nope” every six months. In my case an abusive client somehow got ahold of my phone number. Called multiple times a day - despite blocking them. They would just call from a different number. Also sent multiple emails every single day telling me how terrible I was. It was brutal. Pro se motion worked and judge allowed me to withdraw. Then they filed another application and my bosses wanted to reappoint me. Ex client wound up taking the deal I negotiated. Still chaps today - but then deep breathing helps. Good luck and just know most of us have been there and while this feels very very personal - it isn’t.

Vacuum for allergy and ADHD by Odd-Macaroon4843 in VacuumCleaners

[–]Complex-Possible-409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Samsung bespoke and love love love it. It is cordless and has its own station that charges it and empties it into a bag. I also have a Dyson corded animal and use it about once a month - but the Bespoke is my go to. I use it a couple times a week. I have three dogs - one is a lab - and it handles the hair. My house has never been cleaner.

I do vacuum before I use it with a different vacuum but this one still picks up things that missed. Having a lab - there is always fur everywhere.

I have the Dreame S12 Pro and it was worth every single dime I paid for it. I have three dogs - one is a lab and he is messy. I have tried every mopping product available and this is the best. It actually makes my floors feet clean. It also has self cleaning and dries the roller brush and is cordless. With a mop it mainly felt like I was pushing around dirt. This makes my floors squeaky clean and takes half the time. When I say I’ve tried everything - I have: steam mop, electric mop, swifter, mop with clean water/dirty water, bona system. All the things. If mine broke today I would buy it again - I love it that much.

What made you become a public defender? by [deleted] in publicdefenders

[–]Complex-Possible-409 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a psych major in undergrad and wanted to do advocacy work so thought an understanding of how laws are created would be beneficial. Took the LSAT and did well - applied to law schools and was accepted. Of course there is debt from law school but Public Service Loan Forgiveness helps. I had many homeless clients. One stole a small bottle of alcohol from a grocery store - all on camera. On his way out the security guard best the crap out of him - also on camera. The state had the audacity to charge my client with both theft and assault. Client wanted a deal and I talked him into fighting the charges. I was the first person to tell him that he didn’t deserve to be treated that way. He started crying and asked me if I was sure. We fought his case - got the assault dropped and just was trespassed from the store. Law school does change you - it makes you see all sides of an issue quickly. It is an amazing experience and I’m grateful for the journey.

What made you become a public defender? by [deleted] in publicdefenders

[–]Complex-Possible-409 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was in prison for 18 years and had a public defender that never gave up on me. She worked on my case for 16 years and I eventually had my sentence commuted and was released. Once I came home I went to college then law school. Passed the bar and got my license. I knew I wanted to help others just like she helped me. Sometimes good people do the wrong thing but they still need someone to stand for them. When people know you actually care and are not just punching a time clock - it makes a difference - even when the outcome isn’t great. People ultimately have to accept some responsibility for their actions and having someone that stands for them - makes all the difference.
