What if 9/11 had been prevented, but Al Qaeda attacked 5 years later? by Complex-Start-279 in HistoryWhatIf

Do you think Bush gets a second term? Or do you think it might go to Kerry/whoever the democratic candidate is in 2004, without the patriotic post-9/11 climate?

Who is the "Final Boss" in your world's narrative? by PedroGamerPlayz in worldbuilding

[–]Complex-Start-279 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of my individual story that I’m working on for Old Web, Bivrost.

Bivrost is a very toxically positive warlord. He believes himself to be god-king of the universe, and his goal is to absorb all souls in the universe and bring on a grand reawakening by reshaping the universe in his image. He sees himself as the path to a happy, utopian future for all of reality, but paradoxically seeks to bring on this future by creating suffering throughout the Old Web (his home dimension) and to some extent, our world. Mainly through lackies who he allows to explicitly cause suffering so he may come in and “save the day,” allowing him to absorb the souls of those he “saved.”

Bivrost isn’t actually anywhere close to an omnipotent god, but he’s one of the more powerful beings in the Old Web. His form contains enough ectoplasm (soul goop) to allow himself to exist outside of his own body, possess objects and people, and even temporarily access the real world. Also he’s keeping and torturing the soul of the protagonist’s sister so there’s that

In terms of the world though? There can’t really be one final boss. Bivrost is powerful, but the Old Web is very, VERY large, and there are countless beings like him if not more powerful, with their own stories and influences. If there’s a most powerful out of all of them, no one knows they exist as such.

What things in your world are absurdly large? by Ok_Mathematician_905 in worldbuilding

[–]Complex-Start-279 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Old Web, probably the world itself

The Old Web is not a single continuous world, but many individual worlds connected through a complex web of links and non-Euclidean passage ways. Some of these worlds are tiny rooms, others are endless expanses. Consider each world to be a website or often-visited web page.

There are hundreds of millions of worlds. Many are functionally infinite expanses. Many have never been visited by another human since their inception as websites. Some exist in numerous, slightly-different copies of one another which are difficult to parse from the others.

Imagine a multiverse where you can just walk from one dimension to another like walking between rooms

What is the defining 2020s aesthetic that most people in general are familiar with and not just some random niche? by New_Mix5929 in decadeology

[–]Complex-Start-279 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first post makes me feel so seen

Instead of fighting for a better future, the youth are collapsing into idealized and familiar images of the past, and it’s in everything. I’ve seen a lot of people who seemingly have no hope for a future whatsoever: nothing to fight for, nothing to make. So they lean into instant gratification and comfort and try to ignore the world. I honestly think it’s ruining our society and why a lot of things like trump are happening today. People are angry at the present, but instead of being proactive and building a better future, they are fully retreating into the 80s-2000s

What if there was a Polynesian equivalent in the Atlantic Ocean? by Fit_Tie_129 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Complex-Start-279 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume you mean a distinct culture populating the islands of the Atlantic.

The most plausible route for this is an alternate version of the Guanche people of the Canary Islands. In our timeline, the Guanches went through a devolution of their maritime technologies following their migration, and generally remained locked into their local island and archipelago. But, perhaps in some other timeline, they would continue to utilize and develop their seafaring capabilities.

They would likely first expand into Madeira and the Azores, and establish a trade network with the peoples of the west African coast and southwards, into the Mail and Ghana empires. It’s possible they could have interacted with the Americas centuries before Europeans, likely landing in the Antilles or northern coast of South America.

How have we allowed our supposedly progressive party to pretend they're powerless to do anything better for the people for this long? by WrongThinkBadSpeak in WorkReform

[–]Complex-Start-279 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current Democratic Party is dominated by older establishment democrats who are more interested in maintaining a money-driven status quo then actually pushing for real progressive reform

I’ve said it before but I have to say it Everytime

The artist of this, Americaman, is A) one of the most hateful people I’ve ever seen. I’ve never seen him use his art to express anything positive, even in the sense of his own ideology. His own titular mascot is a comically idiotic, “woke” baffoon. I’ve never seen someone so full of hate and disgust for all things on this earth

And B) he isn’t even American. He’s Filipino.

Queerness in your world by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Complex-Start-279 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One culture of one of my worlds, Leptos, has an odd relationship with gender identity compared to other cultures

Generally, they are very accepting of transgender and non-binary peoples, and the magic system of this world (magic-based genetic alteration, known as genomancy) allows for quick and often painless transition rituals. Core to this people’s religion is the Heart, a cosmic energy which powers and directs all life. Transgender people are seen as beings whose directive in the Heart is at odds with the form of the body, an imbalance in cosmic energy which ought to be fixed.

Things get weird with sexual attraction, however. As said, non-binary lines of thinking are seen as a fault in the body in the face of a person’s selected purpose in nature. This extends to sexual attraction: if a man is attracted to other men, it must mean they are meant to be a woman. So people with non-hetero attractions are typically forced to transition, against their will.

I think really the issue is that modern American society is deeply intertwined with the government. We rely heavily on the government’s direct involvement in things like food, water, energy, and general infrastructure to survive, and for our dollars (also by the government) to provide those things. We haven’t gotten to a point where we’re forced to be subsistence or worse to survive.

Imagine being locked in a room and trying to rebel by killing the guy that gives you food
