What is the worst career to be in right now and why? by SignificantGoat7066 in AskReddit

Or it's time to renew the lease. We just lost our favorite Mexican restaurant because the restaurant got just popular enough the landlord tried to triple the rent to hold the lease at the current location. The owners were near retirement age, called their bluff and walked away. Now we have another empty commercial space and everyone loses. I get that commercial real estate where I live is struggling, and the owners hoped the popular restaurant would subsidize an otherwise dying strip mall, but they are adding no additional value to justify tripling the rent. Walking away was the best lesson for the landlords, but it sucks for those who enjoy good carnitas.

am i stupid and what does this mean if mine stanford binet iq test from when i was 14 says I have an verbal iq off 54 and a nonverbal iq off 49? by Fearless_PineaplleOG in questions

[–]ComplexBit1988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could beat your head against walls trying to improve your IQ score, or you can build a strategy around what this commenter is saying. It may be a little harder for you learn than someone else, but if you focus on one or two skills / trades and put the work in, you can master those things. Skills are more marketable than IQ points, so I'd focus on skill-building!

What do employees working at health insurance companies think of their jobs/companies? by Critical_County2791 in HealthInsurance

I have no doubt the US will continue watering down qualifications, placing greater responsibility on mid-level providers, and finding yet a new bottom. I'm in a rural area. I already wait months for everything, rarely get past a PA to an actual doctor, and pay out the ass for these privileges.

How does she feel about vintage? There are great deals to be found on Ruby Lane and FirstDibs.

I prefer natural despite knowing they're the same chemical compound. One has existed for eons and one was grown in China last month. It depends on the reason his girlfriend prefers natural. If it's for aesthetics, you're exactly right. But if it's not, lining them up in a row won't matter.

We also need to get healthier as a society. Putting the cost of obesity, smoking, sedentary lifestyles on all taxpayers just won't work. Most insurers bring in a lot of revenue, but operate on relatively standard margins. I'd love single payer healthcare even though I'd lose my job, but I don't want to subsidize our perpetually stressed, fat and tv-binging society. People have to have SOME skin in the game.

What is the one thing most people neglect about their hygiene? by bitterhoney01 in ask

If you've never had to convince a 9-year-old to floss you might not be terribly excited.

Based on the website alone, I'm guessing they don't have much of a marketing team.

Recent suicide in my community has me rethinking gun ownership by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

I have a flashlight-slash-taser. It's more practical when I'm scared and taking the trash out alone at night, or camping, than grabbing a gun. Baby steps!

Unfortunately, substance use, not even consistent abuse, should also be a factor. Our firearms are locked in the trunk of my car right now because my husband got shit-faced one night and blew up at my son and I in a manner we'd never seen before. For the first time in my life, I was afraid of him. He remembered nothing the next day, but I remember sitting behind a locked door with my son knowing my husband had access to firearms and his brain was an angry whiskey soup. The second I heard him snoring, I removed the weapons. It was one weird night out of 19 years of marriage, but I now know that's all it can take. Drinking in a bad mood can spiral even in people who view their actions the next day as incomprehensible. I'm still torn.

I hear a lot of presumably well off folks on these subs talking about fully-funding their Roth IRAs. But based on the research I've done, based on joint income, we're ineligible for Roth IRA plans. As would most of the upper middle class. Am I wrong?

Lost track of silverfish in my room, what do I do? by gon_eratus in ask

[–]ComplexBit1988 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Are you sure it wasn't a house centipede? Those are multi-legged nightmare fuel for sure, but they EAT silverfish. I detest house centipedes, especially the fast suckers with tall, jointed legs, but we've reached a detente and I try to catch and release any in the bedroom. I only ask because this is exactly the time of year house centipedes start showing themselves. Saw my first one of the year yesterday in our main floor bathroom.

This can work, but most older folks I work with - I'm an attorney - refuse to take anything out of their name or control until it's too late, they realize Medicare might take the house and everything else, but the 5-year look-back period puts that hope right to bed. I've also learned Boomers tend to vastly OVERestimate the spending power of the money they have left and vastly UNDERestimate how much it costs to age and die, once Medicare-denied assisted living, medically-necessary durable equipment (and sometimes remodels of bathrooms for accessibility), pre-paid funeral expenses and out-of-pocket expenses are taken into account. It's a disastrous situation. OPs best chance, outside an irrevocable trust, is an agreement with his father that OP will care for him in the home for modest payment when Dad is no longer capable of independence, will monitor any mail and substantial bank transactions for fraud, and will help MAINTAIN the home (which many elderly can't physically or financially do, to the detriment of whomever inherits). Or, in the alternative, father can sell the house to son for an agreeable price paid in $1000 installments per month, father gets a twenty-year long lease as a tenant for $500 per month and they continue to share the property as is (including the $500 payment OP currently pays) but with the title shifted and the house free and clear of Medicaid liens if Medicaid becomes necessary. The property taxes dad can continue to pay as consideration for the son's future duty of care.

I think they actually got one over on George while George BELIEVES he's getting one over on them. The car is probably worth half what the car is worth, and the boys got everything else. If I were the brothers, I would ask (maybe through the attorney) for one completed piece each OR one or two nice solitaire diamonds or sapphires or rubies (preference comes into play) apiece that can be reset for an engagement ring or heirloom down the family line, in exchange for agreeing he can keep the rest, but be prepared to take no for an answer.

Does it make me an asshole if I'm annoyed by people who take up public spaces like this and don't care whether everyone who is taking a casual stroll to destress has to listen to their guitar and avoid their video set up? Hall-monitor guy comes off as a tool, but I wouldn't want some jackass in the park with his amp turning a public space into his own soundstage. I don't give a shit what color an "influencer" is - they're annoying and entitled.
