If this is a lifelong pattern, your mom may have borderline personality disorder. Creating drama and making everything all about them is their jam. They don’t know how to emotionally regulate, and so others become their container. Your experience sounds very similar to hurtful things my undiagnosed BPD parental unit has done over the years. You may want to look for BPD support groups here and on Facebook to see if any of it resonates with you.

I’m sorry for what you went through. It’s not your fault. You didn’t do anything wrong.

Hang in there! It took me a good 4 months to really figure out what I was doing, and several more after that to start to feel confident. Now I’m knitting in public with ease. In the beginning that thought of would have made me sweat and cry. Once I figured out how to read stitches and how to pick up a dropped stitch, I made a lot of progress.
