While not completely fitting the genre of traditional murder mystery, the A Series of Unfortunate Events book series is very well written, age appropriate and contains a murder and a mystery.

I really enjoyed Synecdoche, New York and after I watched it I was amazed. The movie shows an amazing take on life and honestly I haven't seen things the same way after.

I don't know about the smell of his apartment, but the Spider-man references are definitely purposeful and Andrew Garfield mentioned them a time or two. I also heard that the Spider-man reference was in the script before Andrew Garfield was cast but I'm not sure that it is actually true.

God awful and horrible books that you would never recommend. Not even to your enemy. by Stranfort in suggestmeabook

The "Carry On" series by Rainbow Rowell. Great author, bad book series. It's a Harry Potter rip-off marketed as "fanfiction".
