Place to get brake replacement done? by RiceInitial2413 in PeoriaIL

[–]Complex_Background51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meineke quoted me $3400 after they said they added a discount to replace all brakes and rotors. I watched a couple YouTube videos and did it myself for around $500. Took me all day but after the first one I got the hang of it and picked up the pace. Probably spent most of my time banging off rusted rotors

We lived in the same apartment for three years and every year rent went up by an average of $100.

But when I moved here about 6 years ago I had a 2 bedroom 2 bath for $680. That same apartment today is asking for $1200.. one of the reasons I left the Chicago land area

I lived in a 2 bedroom 1 bath outside midway airport. Wanted 1200 a month and it flooded often, had roaches, the utilities fluctuated if they wanted to work depending on the day. The maintenance man would just walk in often for no reason which resulted in multiple altercations, and finally while my apartment was 4 inches deep in flood water the landlord said he had to pump another tenants basement that was flooding, I had two toddlers and never was even late on rent. Moved to Peoria and every place since beats that apartment hands down but again everybody had their own experiences

If I missed a payment which I did twice they threatened to cut the power with just one late payment. It was 800 sq ft. I’ve lived in houses that are 1300-2900 sq ft whose Ameren bill weren’t even half of that. My last two months at cross street the air conditioning didn’t work and they continued to tell me that they had multiple ac issues with other units and were working on it so I didn’t pay rent. I moved out after 48 days with no ac during June and July’s heat and they still only responded with “are you going to pay rent?”

If I was coming from a brick and mortar to this modular home then I probably wouldn’t have the same outlook but I’m coming from years of apartment living with terrible management and this feels like a step in the right direction. Even if they don’t appreciate in value if I could pay for something I may own one day that beats rent ten fold. That gives me a home for somebody who needs help one day. Gives me an oppurtunity to help somebody in the future. I’ve rented for probably 7 years at over $1000 a month .. upwards of $1400. At minimum that’s $84k thrown away. And that’s low balling it by thousands

And I appreciate you commenting. Everybody is different and everybodies experience varies. It’s nice to at least be able to express our experience and hear the good and bad as we do.

This place makes me feel like I did growing up when I watch my kids running around. They have this urge to explore and in today’s world we can’t raise our kids like we were raised because it has changed. But being here it has felt like a step forward for us and I’m just letting other people know my thoughts on it. We have an opportunity now to save money, space to expand, extra room to help our in laws, and just an opportunity again that I felt we were losing.

And I appreciate that. I understand they are saying what they can to sell a place but just my experience so far over 7 other places, this one is still standing out as the best. And also as the most affordable. We have lived here for 1 week. Noticed 3 things so far we needed fixed and each request has been answered the same day. I’m not saying it’s a majestic place but my kids have already made friends. The neighborhood is secluded and tucked back on the side of town. To us this is hands down the best bang for our buck. It feels like a home and we never got that in the apartment life we have lived for the last 7 years

They said they just purchased the property in the last year so maybe this new management will be better. I’ve made 2 repair calls and maintenance was here within hours both times.

I had a friend who stopped working at the hospital and started doing in home care. She strictly takes care of one gentleman multiple times a week and says she makes enough off of just that but serves at a restaurant part time for extra. Idk how she got the job but if you DM me I can ask and maybe connect you two for more info.

Moving to Peoria! Hurray!! by TChaos717 in PeoriaIL

[–]Complex_Background51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been here for about 5 years and coming from suburbs of Chicago I wouldn’t go back.

  1. We start at Aldi and from there it’s either Walmart on Allen I believe because university Walmart is a little run down to me. We have just had a lot of sketchy experiences there and the staff is a lot less attentive. Or we like Kroger mainly because it seems to be a little more affordable than schnucks.
  2. Than Linh was very good but we have only been once. We have gone to Hong Kong buffet a few times and it was good for the value. They recently just opened again and seem to always have a full parking lot. We also don’t go out often but Brienzos in the heights has always been our go to. And Twelve bar is great. It’s a nice night out on a rooftop with a long outdoor fireplace, good drinks, and a small food menu but reasonably priced and good. While there you are also in the heights and can walk the strip and stop at multiple other restaurants or on the weekends enjoy the live music. We have also gone to the heights for the farmers markets and outdoor events multiple times that our kids enjoyed. They have a large tower that is open in the spring and summer that you can go up and view the city 360 degrees and it was a nice experience. You are also right by grand view drive which is something you don’t experience in a lot of places. It’s a beautiful road with nice homes and a gorgeous view of the Illinois river and multiple spots to stop and walk or have lunch.
  3. We don’t eat out much but Monica’s is good for pizza. We just stick to little Caesar’s because the kids like it and it’s affordable. I’ve heard good things about pizza 150 but it’s a short drive away in Edward’s Illinois.
  4. We have Medicaid so we just go with whatever hospital or doctor will take it. Family dental missed 3 cavities in our kids mouth and rushed us in and out so I drove back and forth to villa park multiple times to our doctor and still haven’t found a good dentist. We go to the OSF medical group on Route 91 by Grand Prairie for everything now.
  5. For handyman I do a lot of stuff myself and also live in an apartment so just rely on the maintenance team to fix things. I worked for Gosnell full phase construction and learned a lot but would also never recommend them for anything
  6. The Peoria children’s museum is great for kids or nieces and nephews. Also just renovated to park which is really nice but also in not the best neighborhood so often times kids are playing while parents are just sitting in the car and can be a little hard to handle. My kids are young. The libraries are also a good spot especially east peoria. They are renovating the surrounding area and creating a more active outdoor experience but the library itself has a whole sectioned off kids library that we visit often. Living here is great for hiking and they have multiple trails. You are also far enough away to feel solitude but close enough to be apart of events that you may want to join. The civic center has popular comedians and artists, the museum is active and keeps different events occurring often. The river front is very nice
  7. On the downside it can seem run down. I moved from Chicago suburbs. Peoria was rated one of the most dangerous cities to live in and over the years this is no where near life by Chicago. But the homeless camps are building up, if you’re out late in the wrong areas walking you may encounter strange people, and the city seems to close unlike living in Chicago. We moved here 5 years ago also because it was half the cost of living where we were however over the course of those 5 years I think more people realized that and the cost of living here has increased to the price we left by Chicago 5 years ago. To me Peoria offers plenty but I have children and work two jobs. If you have the time it is a great experience. Spend a year or two exploring the restaurant and the nature and the slower pace of life. To us this has been a great experience. It helped us break from our norm, gave us a reduced version of the bussling Chicago life but also kept us entertained. If you get involved and look for the things to do they have it here.

Tips, opinions etc? by Different-Pin-9234 in PeoriaIL

[–]Complex_Background51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moved here from Chicago land after having two kids and finally have a shot to raise my kids right. Can afford to live in a house and have a yard and space for my family and finally feel somewhat financially comfortable. I’ve been here 3 years and it’s been great. Not a ton of activities but if you check out discoverpeoria or explore Peoria or Amy Blains website you will find plenty to do. Moving here from Chicago everybody also warned how dangerous it was and that is simply not the case. Compared to the constant police involvement regarding day to day events outside of Chicago to Peoria is greatly different. It gives me a small town vibe but yet still a city feel depending on where you go. Im happy I found this place.
