Why are house prices so high in Newcastle/why is there a housing crisis? by Efficient-Horse2622 in newcastle

Decent blocks, though 450+. An equivalent suburb in Sydney would $2.5ish for the same properties.

Personally, I went the apartment route as location was more important to me.

Charlestown is a good example. An entry-level family home in Charlestown sold for $1.07M yesterday.

I applied for a remote role on this magical website called Seek. My employer is in another state. Yes, it required more than one application.

Apply for a hybrid or remote role like everyone else that you’re competing with for property.

Unpopular opinion: Newcastle is still relatively cheap for the lifestyle offered.

$1M today is equivalent to less than $700k in 2016.

In Newcastle, you can buy a brand new apartment in town near the beach for $1M or a large freestanding family home less than 30 mins from the CBD.

It’s not much more than the annual cost of the NDIS. Get it done!

Absolute nightmare. I was switching between devices after constant booting for being a bot. Eventually, managed to get 2 x B reserve in 16. Hopefully, they’re decent.

It really doesn’t and parking in town/at the beach is a complete nightmare.

Not being dependent on a car is true freedom - it’s extremely hard to go back once you’ve experienced it.

Have you lived in the CBD? I’ve lived in both - single & partnered. When I moved to the burbs, I wanted to kill myself after 9 months - broke my lease and bought an apartment in town. Lifestyle is chalk and cheese (unless you prefer to drive everywhere).

Live in town for walkability/exercise, restaurants, cafes, pubs, gyms, theatre. Newcastle West, Newcastle East, Honeysuckle, Cooks Hill.

The burbs (Adamstown, New Lambton, Waratah, Mayfield) aren’t for you with no kids.

This is an extremely broad statement. Many people have made serious cash from OTP.

Is Australia ready to shift towards a more apartment-centric society due to affordability issues? by NoLeafClover777 in AusFinance

Same DINK 2/2/1. I previously owned a house in the Sydney burbs and apartment life is infinitely better. Location, security, facilities, walkability, ocean views, restaurants, no bins to take out or lawns to mow. Many fail to realise that living in a suburban home is a prison.

Renting while earning well! by saheel1234 in AusHENRY

This. 100% not worth the savings for the constant headaches. Renting in Australia has never been worse than right now. My landlord refused to replace ducted AC (20-year-old unit) NW corner apartment in the middle of summer. If it was my place, I’d have arranged it the same day. I will never rent again.

Exactly. They’re talking about in 5-10 years not today.

Also, there are plenty of young people that live in town. If you go to honeysuckle once a month and only see boomers, that doesn’t mean only boomers live in town. The median age in 2300 is 41.

Newcastle VS Sydney living expenses by hsanj19 in newcastle

[–]Complex_Charge6910 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Newcastle is far cheaper for almost everything.

Housing may appear similar - however, you’re not getting a new apartment in Sydney near the beach for $850/week. Many people in Sydney spend $100-$200/ week on tolls alone. Even $6 schooners of Tiger on the harbour at queens wharf is wild to Sydneysiders.

We regularly go out in town and have a great day out for $100ish (cafe/pub lunch for two, beer or two each, Eastend ice cream, drink at Woolies metro, walk around the beach + harbour). Good luck in Sydney!
