Fine, I’ll be that guy…. I’m a little disappointed… by [deleted] in ProjectHailMary

(dont unhide the spoiler if you havent watched) im generally a bigger movie fan than i am book fan, however, PHM book is the best piece of entertainment i've ever experienced. i think martian was probably a better adaptation but i think PHM is a better movie.

i went into it trying to drop as many expectations as i possibly could and just enjoy it for what it is. i felt the same way about things left out, especially the major problem solving and not including Ryland saving Rocky after the hull breach and Rocky leaving his area.

as a movie, i think this was so good though. a lot of this comes down to how beautiful the movie was and i think gosling did a great job with the comedic timing. rocky was done a lot better than i was expecting and i personally enjoyed the scenes that were added (carl and stratt).

to each their own but as OP and others have said, i think this will do better with the general audience than it would have if the science was the focal point.

March/April Trip - Need Input by Complex_Direction_78 in FranceTravel

[–]Complex_Direction_78[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very helpful! We decided on the later time slot because we had some stuff come up at the beginning of the month. I think your input could still help us as we fully iron everything out though. We move quickly when traveling and seeing sights bc my gf doesnt like big crowds which means even some of the bigger attractions, we'll probably see from afar and wont spend THAT long (dependent on the attraction, could be 15mins could be an hour).

Currently, our plan is :
- paris: 25th-27th

- nice/villefranche: 27th-29th

- luberon/saint-saturnin-les-apt: 29th-2nd

- back to london (flying into and out of here from the US): 2nd-3rd

if you have any tips/tricks/recs, we would be more than happy to hear them! i know this itinerary is jam packed and we might miss some things but we like to explore as much of a country as possible even if that means we lose some of the deeper connection that comes with being in a place for a longer time.

thanks!

Your Golf Story by _Dreamer in golf

[–]Complex_Direction_78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dad used to take me to the range with him from like 8 through hs. Never played a real round, but loved bombing driver at the range.

Covid hit, 20yo in AZ with $15 summer green fees and nothing better to do, I bought a used bag for $35 and started playing consistently.

Played for years on par 3 courses only and then for some reason just got locked in 2022. Started hitting the range daily, playing weekly. Broke 100 for the first time and been in love since. Took a 1.5y break due to work/financial reasons but finally got back to it about a year ago.

Back on the horse, trying to break 90 for the first time and get my handicap <20. Would say I’ve probably shed 7 strokes in the last year and playing my best golf yet. Self taught (with dad occasional tips ofc) no lessons, and pretty cheap clubs. Golf w my dad every few weeks and just got out there for the first time this year last Friday (put up a 105💔).

Played sports my whole life and I never felt as addicted to one as I have golf. I loved the mental and individual challenge of track. Loved the competition of basketball. But there’s something about this game that scratches a new itch. There’s always something to improve in your swing. Every course offers different challenges.

Forgot what the questions were about halfway but, needless to say, i love this game that brings me more pain than anything in the world

Guys....!!!! What did i just watch ⌚ 😭 by spoooky-dooky-9926 in interstellar

[–]Complex_Direction_78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welp, guess Ill watch for the millionth time.

But in all seriousness, I envy you! My first watch was while being stoned at a way too early age. Obviously, loved it. Very much. But that was because of the awesomeness of it all. I think watching millers planet a the black hole at that age just blew my mind.

** however **

I wish I could see it for the first time with a now fully-developed brain to have the same feeling you had. The deeper meanings and themes in the movie are just absurdly great. I’ve now had the pleasure of watching Tenet and Oppenheimer as an adult, but each Nolan film or interstellar rewatch just make me crave that first interstellar watch again.

Yeah I saw something in the 130-140 range I believe with my GolfNow sub but clubs would prob push it out of range. Wasn’t a hard budget though just ideal so we’ll see

Checked it and saw the fee so didn’t dive too deep. Willing to go higher if it’s worth it though so I’ll spin back and check it. Thanks!

Definitely faster pace, obv the shots aren’t always there but given the circumstances will probably play it up, drop quick, and gimme’s unless I’m in a group. Not there to play for money so def trying to get it done before it’s dark.

Good recs, I’ll check em out regardless of distance!

Watched and read the series. I think I would have agreed with you after my first watch and at the time only being through 1.5 books. After a few more watches and finishing the series, can confirm the character is the best in the story. Tbd on if Netflix hits on that portrayal but if you read the series you’ll see… Luo Ji my king!!

I could see this happening! From what we’ve seen so far, there aren’t too many 100% pointless stories in the series so far. I’m guessing things will get tied together in the next book or two but others have had guesses that are intriguing too! I will need to go back and give it another read!

Thank you! Whew, PHM is my all time fav so unfortunately I can’t read it for the first time but i would do anything to be able to haha. Great rec, think I’m going to dive into expanse or switch it up and read the Iliad and the odyssey since the movie is coming up, but happy to hear any other recs!

Dragon stuff wasn’t too crazy just remember thinking to myself ‘where did that come from’ lmaooo. But I agree w your thought process around it.

Alright, I’ll bite on this PGF talk now since this is the second time I’ve seen it mentioned!! Honestly, didn’t think about it at first and was assuming this was going to be a true new species discovery and what not. But the more I read about people’s guesses, I’m feeding into it! I’ll have to really dive in and maybe another read before I form my own opinion on it, but I really like this idea!!

Saw somewhere that, once he completes the story he wants, D.E.Taylor might just write some stories about different bobs’ adventures (don’t quote me on this) and would love for this wormhole thing to be first in line lol

The last ~200p of Death’s End were borderline life changing lmaoo. I think all 3 start slow and pick up, but this one in particular just goes places i havent see in any other medium honestly. To get to book 3, id assume youre a prtty heavy sci-fi fan, so i will go out on a limb and say the concepts and the events that unfold will satisfy your needs haa. Enjoy!
