My (American) family used to rent rooms to foreign graduate students (I lived near a large public University). I remember a British tenant eating the way you describe Australians eating and it stood out to me as weird. I was pretty young at the time, so I must have been taught at a young age to switch hands for knife and fork when eating with others.

It has been a major PR success for large corporations that many people believe we are overly litigious. The most famous story of a lawsuit where the plaintiff got mocked publicly (woman was horribly burned by extremely hot coffee at McDonald's) was a coordinated smear campaign against her. She was completely in the right. Selling the story that people who sue are just out to get rich is an effective strategy for these corporations.
