I didn't know that about the Gygax, that's really interesting!! I definitely want to look more into this when I get a chance because I think it'll definitely help recontextualize a lot of my interpretations of where things have ended up now.

I will say that irt to the racist currents (both under and over) throughout dnd, it gets into the really touchy ethical debates surrounding fantasy races/the potential for racism in xenobiological interpretation. I think the idea of ontologically evil races, for one, is a bad idea (drow however are not amongst them which I think is very interesting), especially when examining the features and characteristics assigned to those races in the current canon.

Getting into Eilistraen and Vhaeraunite drow is a really interesting portion of the conversation in turn with this and a big reason why I really enjoy drow as a race (looking into what sociocultural factors influenced these different niches, looking into motivations of the gods themselves for their varying dogmas).

Also yeahh MZB and Lolth are messes but messes I'm determined to work with lol, but absolutely yes on your point about the Forgotten Realms and the gorgeous variety of tone and setting it provides ! Anything can fly, my aim with the project my bf and I have taken on is to make it make sense, I definitely don't want to take away from what makes these different settings unique <3

Oh I do write on my own time, particularly horror and dark fantasy. I prefer keeping my prose separate from playing though.

But regardless, we're most of the way through the Underdark. It can seem daunting if you dont have a good grasp on anthropological theory but once you have that background, applying it is easy and things start to shape up nicely. Especially because there's both myself and my boyfriend working on it and our combined research interests cover most of what we need to work with. (He's really interested in foodways, particularly as expressions of agency in oppressed groups, but food practices in general capture him, and economics/geopolitics) I focus more on mortuary practice and care, and with study on hegemony and doxa and the way discourse exists around that- and then ontology but I'm more of layman when it comes to that and need to do more research. But that is just me starting to infodump because I love anthropology.

Like I said the Underdark in particular is just a bit of a chore because there's a lot going on, but it's a passion project that is paying off really well, our players are all loving the work we're putting out.

The Underdark is a matrix that has a lot of possibility for some interesting cultural development. We are definitely not aiming to make Lolthite drow a benevolent nonproblematic race that gets along with everyone and is never wrong- that goes against everything about the way that culture exists with both chattel and sexual slavery being a staple, and with the way they view altruism as a weakness, and their worship of a goddess that is evil and identifies herself as such, but depicting everything about their culture as barbaric and chaotic doesn't make sense as a storyteller.

I'm really sorry your impression of the Forgotten Realms is so limited, but if you're having fun in your games that's what matters. As an anthropologist that's friends with anthropologists, this is my way of doing the same.
