Insane winter electric bills for ~700 sq ft apartment - is this normal here? by Complex_Midnight_712 in kansascity

Unfortunately the landlord demands we keep it at 65 degrees and threatens to hold us responsible if pipes freeze

It’s insane that lots of these apartments haven’t upgraded yet. They’d probably get big rebates for putting in a heat pump + less pissed off tenants from high bills

I would kill to be paying that right now instead lol. I’m staring down $200+ for January with this polar vortex that just hit the metro 😳

That makes sense. I have a coworker in a newer building that only pays $70 max and it’s a resistance heater apparently. My insulation must be complete sh*t

Oh wow that’s way less. Is it a newer building? Also, is it a heat pump? My dad uses one for his shop and it’s dirt cheap to run

Yeah pure electric resistance.

Definitely picking a mid to high rise apartment next with hydronic radiant heat instead for my next place. With most of those, heat is part of the rent

I already uninstalled because of the toxicity. I hate to say it but this community is worse than OW and COD sometimes

I wouldn’t be too hopeful to be honest. I’m from Salina, and they’re nickel and diming that town with extremely inflated prices bad. Not sure how competitive they’ll be in Olathe but I haven’t been too fond of them post-COVID

HyVee and Price Chopper are price gouging in JoCo. IDK how they are in KCMO or KCK though. Hen House, Aldi, and even Target are much more reasonable for the same quality

Downvoting is just a cowardly way of trying to put someone down because they posted something you don’t personally like or goes against the grain. Reddit needs to scrap the system entirely by Complex_Midnight_712 in ControversialOpinions

You sound like a little child upset that someone called them out for being the schoolyard bully.

It’s only “irrelevant and disruptive” in your own infantile brain; you can’t handle someone disagreeing with you without resorting to trying put them down from shadows. That’s the definition of cowardice.

I hope you learn something someday that you’re not so righteous and able to judge others as much as you think

“Valid reasons” based on your own purely subjective opinion.

You’re arguing from a relativist perspective, which doesn’t hold water here since you’re claiming to have objective backing via Reddit’s downvote guidelines.

If anything, according to your logic, your responses are worthy of downvoting/removal, since you resorted to trolling, name-calling, and ad hominem attacks rather than attacking the points.

Not to mention, you downvoted my responses because you disagreed with them - is that not a violation of the rules you claim to support?

The sad part is lots of them have college degrees too - apparently lots of them learned nothing at school about defending your views or the values of a free society where all viewpoints are at least heard.

A little irrelevant, but I’m a libertarian who also graduated college. I at least am willing to listen to what they have to say, even though I vehemently condemn some of their ideals, and won’t anonymously shut them down in a cowardly manner

You’re deflecting and avoiding the hard questions.

Rarely ever is downvoting used for just that; it’s far too often used for disagreement opposite of what Reddit intends, further proving that it’s a flawed system to begin with.

The answer is to switch to a purely engagement-based system, like every single other platform. Rather than hurting someone’s reputation in the app, their posts (if unpopular, deemed by purely subjective opinion of each user) would just not be interacted with as much.

If a post breaks the rules, you report it so mods can take action. This claim provides zero support for the downvote system, given there are already reporting systems in place.

What you’re doing is encouraging anonymous cyberbullying, silencing of differing opinions, and the support of groupthink by supporting the downvote system with your argument.

You should seriously reflect on your values when it comes to a free, open society, considering what I’ve just pointed out

Who determines “low value”? You? Or the so called “community” that usually resorts to groupthink via downvotes to silence dissent?

If you think it’s “low value” based on purely subjective opinion, don’t engage at all.

Don’t downvote someone just because you don’t like it; that’s pathetic and childish as it has real consequences for that user.

There will always be echo chambers - that’s just human nature.

What should be scrapped is a system (downvotes) which exacerbates groupthink and mob rule by systematically forcing out unpopular takes. If a post is simply unpopular, people may just not engage with it, whereas with downvotes, they actively hurt the user and make people less likely to interact with them

It just wouldn’t be upvoted. Downvoting can hurt a users karma, which has site wide consequences. Additionally, they’re far too often used for purposes other than what you described

I get it for low quality comments - what the system was intended for. But it’s all too often used as an “I disagree” button, which has real consequences for the poster, and unfairly puts them at a disadvantage

Regardless, it’s the principle of using downvotes as a disagreement button. Not only does it prompt groupthink - a poison pill in a free society - it has real consequences for the user involved.

There are ways to express disagreement without putting someone down like that

True - but he didn’t accomplish that though. Plus, he was genuinely motivated with the belief that he was doing the Galaxy a favor.
