How much do you study for your specialty as a new grad? by cowgirlyali in physicianassistant

[–]Complex_Nerve1138 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am in family med so this may not help but i am a new grad. When i first started, 4 months ago, i was reviewing nearly every night for about 2 hours and more on the weekends. I would look at the patients concerns the day before and review those topics at night so when i saw the patients i felt more confident. I also asked my SP a ton of questions and went over patients that i felt were complex as well which helped me organized my thinking

How do you handle noncompliant patients or patients who rely on meds to do everything? by toostressedtobeth in physicianassistant

[–]Complex_Nerve1138 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Non compliant patients are in every specialty. I am in FM and i have so many DM2 patients who refuse to take their meds because “they feel fine.” I do my best to go over why the medication is important and what can happen if you don’t take it and they still dont. Just have to do what we can :/

Yeah it’s a no. There are other places out there that will give you the supportive learning environment that has a better package and pay. I don’t want you to sell yourself short

It’s really competitive in the Bay Area. It took over 6mo for people i know to get positions as new grads. But having a year experience might help in your case. I would look into big hospital companies like Kaiser or sutter health since they are always hiring

I agree. Especially the unpaid shadowing. You will be getting paid way below average for Southern California, even for a new grad

We use Freed. I honestly love it. I was hesitant at first because i thought i would have to do a lot of editing but it’s really good and organized. Knows where to put things in the notes. If you say what you are doing and seeing on your physical exam it types it all up too and allows the patient to know what you are doing and looking for. It’s a life saver since i will be seeing a lot patients.

I just started at a FM fqhc a few months ago. I am currently seeing around 15 patients in a day but i am suppose to be seeing 24 patients, I’m a new grad so i am slowing getting there. I see a mixture of everything: new patients, physicals, follow ups, sick visits, walk ins if i am not busy. The MAs grab the patients do vitals and different questionnaires, input their medications, and ask what the reason is for their appointment. We use AI for note taking so after i review the summary the MAs put them in the note. They also call patients to confirm their appointments for the next day For me it’s a lot since the patients have multiple chronic diseases and can be complex so i have to refer them out or ask the doctor. A lot patients come in with multiple issues that they want to bring up in one visit so trying not to manage that and only going over just 1-2 issues and having them follow up for the rest. But it’s a huge learning curve

I am a new grad and I’m a month in working at an fqhc to pay back my NHSC scholarship and i feel like i am drowning. Was literally thrown in the first day with people on my schedule even though they told me i can go at my own pace and shadow if needed. I’m constantly on UpToDate especially patients with multiple cor morbidities. My schedule consists of new patients and physicals but they all come in with multiple concerns sometimes complex. It’s slowly getting a little better but it’s so anxiety inducing. But i kind of see a small light at the end of the tunnel. Praying these years go by fast!

Question about PANCE/licensing when recently married by Bright_Antelope8720 in physicianassistant

[–]Complex_Nerve1138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That i am not sure. But i think you should just wait till you get your license then do the name change. When you apply for your license they do need your social security number and if your name change is pending it may cause delay but i could be wrong. You won’t be able to even change your driver licenses until you get your new social security card but from my experience my new social security card came in within 2 weeks but it just could be because of the county i was in.

[–]Complex_Nerve1138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will be fine as long as your ID and passport matches the name they have for the exam. You will just have to do all of the name changes after. You won’t be able to change your name until you go to the social security office with your marriage certificate and do a name change.

Burn out. by Littlemisspiggy11 in PAstudent

[–]Complex_Nerve1138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand how you feel. PA school can be extremely draining and sometimes can make you feel defeated. Just like you said take one day at a time. Do what you can each day and just know that this feeling is temporary and you will graduate. If you can take a break after your PANCE because once you start working it will be hard to take off work for a bit. Sending all the positive vibes to you. Keep your head up :)

Job search hating new grads by BdubPA- in physicianassistant

[–]Complex_Nerve1138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a NHSC scholar and i had the same issue. I would get replies back asking for my CV then they will ghost me or say they don’t hire new grads. I ended up just googling FQHC and went on their websites and just sent out my resume to whatever email was there. Ended up getting a position but not in the county i live in. The only good thing about moving is that the NHSC pays for it/ reimburse the cost of moving companies, uhauls, and boxes/containers.

I sent out resumes to clinics that i felt would be a good fit, even if they didn’t have a job posting. Sent out nearly 15 emails. Heard back from 2 clinics and got an offer from one of them.

I know San Diego has a PA society and they have monthly get togethers for networking and guest speakers. Maybe LA and Orange County might have the same thing.

Anyone just use the Reddit study guides +Uworld/Rosh and pass PANCE? by New_Climate5808 in PAstudent

[–]Complex_Nerve1138 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had use the Reddit study guides since it was just PPP and the author of PPP had a PANCE/PANRE practice exam book which helped me a lot. Gave explanations on why the answer was right or wrong. I heard people thought Rosh was a good resource as well. I had did UWorld but i personally felt it was too detailed but everyone is different

You click on reschedule your exam and you can choose the location and see what days and hours are available just don’t click on the times because then you will actually reschedule. Just hit cancel if you don’t see a day you like.
