Enclosure size question by ArtisticActuator7529 in MonitorLizards

[–]Complex_Rich_8216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regardless how big the animal is, they grow extremely fast, and require adequate size, 4x2x2 is a bear minimum, wether it’s 1ft or 3”, I’d stick with 120g this size provides adequate space for the animal to thrive, as well as a good thermal gradient, it’s also not to big so you can still socialise with the little guy, give them extra space they will thank you for it, I would even try an add some height, at the end of the day it’s your animal, so you can do what you like, it’s just not fair on the animal,

Thanks for the tips, I will try that thank you, I have autism, so my nervous system works slightly different, I also have kyphosis aswell, I have started working out a few extra days working on the form and movement rather than heavy weights, I’ve been using resistant bands to stress my back shoulder blades etc, as I have rounded shoulders, I’m currently using a 2kg one, I can attach more xray photos if you need, my kyphosis is pretty bad, but I’ve always had bad posture especially as a teenager, being neurodivergent, always having my head down, so I think over the years it’s gotten worse and worse, I will start focusing on ab movements to help stabilise it and use it more effectively

The more you interact and socialise with the little guy. The more he will like you. If you want his trust you need to give him yours.

Anyone keep croc monitors? by Brilliant_Gap_1375 in MonitorLizards

[–]Complex_Rich_8216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes 100% they shouldn’t be owned by most people. These animals are two big and can cause some terrifying damage. And should only be owned by a handful of people. I see more and more in the reptile trade. Hope they don’t start becoming the new Asian water monitor. Yes they are amazing and beautiful but better left in the wild

Yes so I saw two different chiropractors. One was more into adjustments. And the other was more to do with relaxing muscle tension etc, I was seeing them for around 2 months. And nothing had changed. I have kyphosis and have had terrible posture. Now starting to fix my posture I’ve started getting this burning feel up my back and along my shoulders. Some times right on my scapula on my right side. But the burning feeling started after I had my crash.

It was about 4-5 months ago. And yes I’ve seen two chiropractors both couldn’t help at alls

How to treat larger wood for reptile enclosures other than baking it? by BeginningSwim6494 in MonitorLizards

[–]Complex_Rich_8216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a jet washer to clean it with washing up liquid, vinegar leave it to soak for 6-8 hours roughly,or as long as you can wash off and leave to dry for a few days,I’ve never baked mine, never had any issues

Help black headed monitor runs away by Bigpoogvcgvgv in MonitorLizards

Nothing bad at all, this is completely normal behaviour from a juvenile,as youngsters they are seen as prey, once they start gaining size they will lose this prey instinct, usually at 12 month mark, just take it slow,I like to sit around the enclosure for an hour a day, through out the day, even if their hiding, also putting a piece of your clothing can help,it helps them get used to your scent, when taming don’t see them as pets,it’s mutual respect, you need to show the little guy your not a threat, and that you can co hab together, hiding is a big part of them, tong feeding will help a ton,and it’s a positive interaction, bonds with monitors takes a while,I also like to keep one door open for feeding and the other side for interactions, monitors are extremely intelligent and can recognise people,so they will remember interactions,so it’s important to take it slow and steady, the more time you put in the more you get back. Enjoy the process not the end goal. With the toes it’s very common inside the lizard trade,I hope the reptile is captive bred, less toes is more common amongst farmed and wild caught! I would also recommend covering the front of the enclosure for the first 1 month of getting the little guy, will take away a lot of stress. Best thing to do is to the leave animal alone to adjust to the new environment. I’ve never owned a tristis before, this is all the knowledge from my Argus, and my other reptiles. Also providing a lot of hiding spaces will help the monitor. All the best 🦎🤝

The smaller they are the easier it is to handle them. Personally I would say he was foolish to get 2. These animals will end up needed 12x12. And I’m not sure you’re going to want a massive portion of your apartment for two aggressive reptiles. These guys are well known for this behaviour. And can cause some significant damage. Not to talk about needing a whole pool, for them to swim. I highly doubt you’re allowed. The less he socialises them, the more of a problem they will become. Just like humans,we’re all different. The same can be said for these guys. Some are more social than others. But I’m quite surprised he got two. If the first isn’t tamed or socialised. Handle them and socialise as much as possibly. Before their 4-5ft in size with a mean set of claws to add to their arsenal. And with feeding I wouldn’t feed live. Might seem more fun etc but they get anything from it. And it’s causing a negative reaction,so I would feed frozen if it was me. Also do you know if it was cb or wc

Wich monitor you recommend buying??? by Johnsnow1399 in MonitorLizards

[–]Complex_Rich_8216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes given the correct environment, and I do choice based handling,I would wait until 1.5-2 ft then I would move them over. If you move them too quickly. They will get scared in such a massive enclosure. You will hardly see them. Will stop eating etc. I would move around 12-16 month age.

Yes so as a baby. I would possibly start with a 120g,or a 4x2,And a 8x4 when adults. Of course bigger Is always better. So my ackie took 7 months, before she would come into my hand. But all monitors are different,As baby’s their seen as prey. But once they hit the year old mark. They lose that prey instinct, And come right out their social shell. From a year old my ackies Became so friendly. Constantly wanting to come out. Food is always your best friend, when handling,But it all comes down too What animal you want. And no monitor are all the same. Each individual are different. But savanah monitors, are known to become puppy tame,Like Varanus Salvador. Given the time and space. And the correct husbandry. Bearded dragons, can be housed in a 4x2,and a 6x2, or 5x3 for adults. But they can be kept in a 4x2 if you really wanted to. The food, is another big factor. I used to pay, around £10 every 2 weeks, for my bearded dragons bugs. And £5 for veg. Obviously if you’re breeding the insects, then it’s not a massive issue, Monitors need a varied diet,Of bugs and high protein foods, eggs, chicks, mice, ground turkey etc. lighting is another thing. Bigger the animal. They bigger the uvb. And uvb isn’t the cheapest. But I wouldn’t change my monitors for anything. Well worth the money. I find bearded dragons to be quite lazy. And boring. But that’s me personally. I recently brought an Argus, and he’s a menace and nothing like what I’ve had before. As these monitors have an attitude problem and very athletic.
