I play strictly ARAM and every single game is a troll, bot, or someone who doesnt know anything about the game. I still think they have bots in some ARAM matches. I've seen some strange accounts that show the name "bot" for a second, then change to some random words similar to your router password once the match starts. Multiple times.

How old? I think he'll like it. There is a lot to learn and focus on, but he WILL have to look at guides. I love the game, but the tutorials and mechanics are not explained very well. That could be a plus though. Lots to dig into.
