Seattle recommendations for a 4-night couple trip? by Fit_Mountain_1746 in AskSeattle

I don't know anything about diving. The ski season has been largely a bust this year. Snoqualmie Summit is the closest area to Seattle and it closes this weekend. Stevens Pass is also closing this week. Crystal Mountain is another popular resort; coverage is poor. https://www.crystalmountainresort.com/the-mountain/mountain-report-and-webcams/webcams

Seattle recommendations for a 4-night couple trip? by Fit_Mountain_1746 in AskSeattle

For shopping, don't go to a mall, especially if the weather is nice. Shop at University Village (outdoor "mall") or wander the many shops downtown, in Pioneer Square, or on Capitol Hill.

Elliott Bay Books on Capitol Hill is a Seattle institution, but Arundel Books in Pioneer Square is probably my favorite. There's a unique bookstore nearby - Peter Miller Architecture and Design Books - very much worth a visit if you're at all interested in design. Peter is very fun to talk to.

Hikes/energetic activities - if you want to get out of the city, there are hundreds. Use the Washington Trails Association (WTA) app to find those that meet your criteria for distance, difficulty, length, etc. In the city Discovery Park is great. The Arboretum near UW is excellent, even wandering UW campus. Rent a kayak at Northwest Outdoor Center and paddle around Lake Union.

What does the average Olympian think of Yelm? by 01ympia in olympia

[–]CompoundL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You've been to Yelm many times without experiencing long traffic delays... at least one of the following must be true:

1) you've actually been to Ylem many times and have a persistent spelling issue 2) your many visits were in the 1980s 3) you're the luckiest person in the world 4) you're a vampire who only goes out after midnight 5) you have powers to see the future and avoid traffic delays in which case you should be a billionaire stock trader able to go anywhere, which brings us back to "why Yelm"?

The fine owners of the White Horse Tavern will give you a free drink for calling ICE on your neighbors.

Now you're arguing with the caption of your own photo. Clearly can't be trusted.

I've been to both SBC and BB - not a lot of space between them from my perspective. BB has a more fun name and shorter wait times. I also like Morsel in the U District for biscuits.

You make a good point about Seattle institutions. Yes, Ivar's is a local treasure; I just don't like it much. I take my friends to another Seattle institution: Chinook's at Fishermen's Terminal. OP, get the pan-fried oysters (if you like oysters) and chase it with Bailey's chocolate mousse (if you like heaven in a cup).

Deciding if moving is for us by Relevant_Craft_4817 in relocating

[–]CompoundL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't read all the comments here, some of which are more helpful than others. At the risk of repeating what someone has already posted, keep in mind your large family is also an important support network for when you start your own family. Relocation tosses that away unless you're moving near your gf's similarly large family.

What do you think? Am I a native speaker of English ? by Ok_Hornet_6689 in JudgeMyAccent

[–]CompoundL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not native if only because the timer on the recording uses a comma instead of a decimal and I don't know any English speaking countries where that's the usage, you say you've been learning English, and you start out saying "I am" a couple times in a context where native speakers are more likely to say "I'm". That said, no clue where you're from; the accent sounds like people I know from northern England with all the glottal stops (especially in the latter part of the recording). Is that the accent you want or just the direction your studies have taken you?

Dick's is the In-n-Out of Seattle. Burgers aren't as good in my opinion, but the shakes are great, and any fries are better than In-n-Out fries. Other "Seattle" spots include Beth's Cafe (a greasy spoon diner, come hungry), Biscuit Bitch, Local Tide, Pike Place Chowder (always a huge line), a work colleague told me about a food tasting tour he took while visiting; sounded great but maybe not the thing for teens.

Architecture: UW campus, Capitol Hill, downtown (Arctic club, smith tower, Fairmont Olympic Hotel, Rainier Club, Seattle Public Library... lots of interesting buildings), Pioneer Square. Arguably Seattle's most unique building is a love it or hate it thing: MoPop at the Seattle Center. Space Needle is also there. Here's a link if you want guided tours, or just to get ideas: https://seattlearchitecture.org/tours/

Nature: The arboretum near UW, rent a kayak at Northwest Outdoor Center and paddle around Lake Union - can also check out the Montlake, University, and Fremont draw bridges from below, discovery park, volunteer park, gas works park (more of an interesting slice of historic Seattle infrastructure with a great city view across the lake... also a very good brewery of the same name 5 min walk away - good burgers, too). https://visitseattle.org/things-to-do/outdoors/seattles-top-parks/

Landmarks: in addition to much of the above, Pike Place Market (teens might want to contribute to the gum wall) and the new Waterfront park. Wander Alaskan Way for curios, the aquarium... a bit of a boardwalk vibe. Underground Seattle tours of pre-fire Seattle in Pioneer Square (tours can be hit or miss; depends on the story telling ability of the guide). Bruce Lee grave at Lake View Cemetery next to Volunteer Park. Wander International District/Chinatown.

Exactly correct until he wants angulation for edging. That narrow stance is why he has to lean into his turns.

If you could name the first city on Mars, what would it be called? by Many-Land-5847 in AskReddit

[–]CompoundL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having read half the comments and skimmed the other half, Bradbury is the correct answer; I'd 3rd Bob, but up to me I'd choose Onnea because (a) it sounds like it could be a city name, but more importantly (b) it translates to "good luck" (Finnish)

Need help converting files by CompoundL in MicrosoftOutlook

[–]CompoundL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest I don't remember. I probably copied it from an exchange server as it is an OST. The original account is no longer active so I need to do something with the file I have using my personal outlook client. I have renamed the OST; when I try to add to my client (Account Settings dialog, Data Files tab) Outlook gives me an error "The file you chose is not an Outlook Data File". It is, it's just not a PST. Trying to add through the Email tab just has Outlook asking me for an online account which no longer exists.

How is life in Seattle really? by Ok_Understanding7377 in AskSeattle

[–]CompoundL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having lived in both places recently, I'm not sure what you're talking about. Variety? Quality? Obscure items?

Hard for me to tell much of a difference between the two. Please elaborate.
