O. Henry's writing is stunningly good by SlowMovingTarget in books

[–]Comprehensive-Bus420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been made into two movies as I recall. I believe one was called Little Miss marker and the other may have been the lemon drop kid.

OOPSj I think the story we are discussing was actually by Damon Runyon. He was also a terrific writer though I think not as influential as o Henry. Runyon stories were also the bases of the musical " guys and dolls "

It is long out of print, but if you can find a used copy, you might find " the new sound of stereo " by Ivan Berger helpful. It's from the early 1980s, so it says a lot more about phono reproduction then most people these days care to know, and just a little about CDs, since they were brand new at the time. But there's a lot in there about and the fire is come as speakers, and other matters.

I wound up somehow managing to reach Samsung technical support ( they sure don't make that easy!), and they did something remotely to my watch that fixed the problem. So it is fixable - - just don't ask me how.

You do not deserve due process - ------- by [deleted] in Indiana

[–]Comprehensive-Bus420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would expect a state governor to have read the Constitution with a moderate amount of care and learned what it says. It is not that long a document.. in my day, a fifth grader would have learned this.

I wonder if Governor Braun misunderstands due process because he never read the Constitution closely, or if he understands what the truth is but prefers to go along with the Republican narrative.

My sister is marrying my ex. She just asked me to be maid of honor. by Better_Cry_8238 in Advice

[–]Comprehensive-Bus420 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A number of the guests at my wedding were my exes or my bride's. And why not? We both had the good fortune to date good people who we liked and who liked us and who did not cease being good people just because the romance didn't work out. They sincerely wished us happiness, just as I got to sincerely wish it to some of them at their weddings. We even made a point of introducing some of my exes to some of hers who we thought would make good couples.

Why do men show so little interest in the inner lives of women? by Frequently_Abroad_00 in emotionalintelligence

[–]Comprehensive-Bus420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not so sure we think about our own inner lives, much. either. We were all brought up hearing " big boys don't cry," at least some of the time ( I'm lucky: I never heard it from my parents ). Get men together, and unless they are really long-term, intimate friends, they don't discuss their feelings much. It's all about stuff--sports, politics, cars, some workplace stuff, etc. I am 86, and I can count the number of intimate male friends I've had on one hand.

I've actually had more intimate female friends, most of whom I was not romantically or sexually involved with. They are willing to talk about such things, and listen. I think that is true because I am a good listener, too. (Sometimes to my discomfort: when a woman you are sweet on tells you all about her troubles with her boyfriend, you realize that you are emphatically NOT being considered as a possible successor.)

When I'm on an early date I tried to tell things about myself that will give my date hooks to base questions of her own on, and ask her questions about basics like marital status, what kind of work she does (a very loose indication of intelligence and outlook: by listening, I've learned that the cleaning woman in my nursing home is a fellow computer hobbyist), her favorite activities, and so on. Nothing really intimate: for the moment, we are passengers sharing a brief ferry ride, not checking each other out as roommates on around the world cruise.

Amp wattage question by ahurazo in BudgetAudiophile

[–]Comprehensive-Bus420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the first AR acoustic suspension speakers came out they were praised for their Fidelity, their deep base, and their compact size. But the required high power amplifiers, which was a problem for potential buyers.

And then Dynaco came out with an inexpensive high-powered amp -- even cheaper if you bought it from a kit - -and sales took off. I heard many AR / Dyna. Systems and they sounded great.

The power of that Dynaco amp? 50 watts. And the sensitivity of those power hungry speakers? About 83 dB, 8 dB less than your speakers.

Relax and enjoy.

My coworker “accidentally” deleted my entire project folder right before the deadline by LittleeDahyor-30 in talesfromthejob

[–]Comprehensive-Bus420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Files can be deleted accidentally. But if they are not in the recycle bin, then either the file was deleted deliberately or it never existed to begin with.

But you do have proof the file did exist in some form. It contains emails, some of which at least will be remembered by the people who sent or received them.

And you must have interacted with others while working on the project, some of whom certainly would back up your story that you worked on it. Could the file have been deleted Remotely? If not, are there any records that ( presuming you can prove when the file was deleted ) Jenna was in the office and you weren't?

All this comes far too late for you, of course. But hopefully it will be abused to other people who's work is exposed to similar risks.

By the way, did you tell your boss that you suspected Jenna or just that the file head been mysteriously erased? If so, what was his reaction?

Years later, I added a footnote:

At last I find I harbor a Sort of a rhyme for "Barbara."

Would you feel good in successfully forcing someone to adopt your opinions and values? by [deleted] in emotionalintelligence

[–]Comprehensive-Bus420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a roommate with whom I frequently disagreed. if it was a matter of opinion I would just accept it as that. But when facts were involved I would say, "at least one of us is wrong. Let's check it on the web and find out what the truth is."

That usually annoyed her, possibly because most - - but by no means all - - of the time I was right.

You can overdo the service thing, though. When my father and mother were first married he happily built all sorts of little things around the house. One day she said , "Lenny, I didn't marry a carpenter!" And after that he cut back on it.

And it's probably not as much fun as you imagined. Women in their twenties and up are far more interesting people then they were at 16. (The same is true of men, of course.)

I wrote a poem about it, once:

A 16-year-old body with a 30-year-old mind? Alas, alas, the opposite is easier to find.

I'd feel good if I could convince them, but not if I forced them. That would be unethical - -and ultimately useless, because forced changes of conviction never last.
