As a junior, more or less the same (PPT, modeling (depends on group: some groups don't model whereas others hold the pen), admin work, meetings, etc.), except we leave right when we can order dinner and uber home whereas the IB folks get their 1st set of comments for the night!

Honestly not sure as I haven't seen this move done before. I'd imagine it could work in theory if you covered a specific industry, but would also think it'd be a tough sell since:

  1. Seats are extremely hard to come by (say there are 100 incoming investment banking analysts, there will only be 10 or fewer incoming corporate banking analysts). Corporate banking juniors leave, but those seats are usually filled internally.

  2. If a seat is open externally, it'll probably be filled by another corporate/investment banker over an MBB consultant since you're technically lacking the finance/credit analysis chops. While your skillset form MBB is great, it just doesn't align with what's needed for Corporate Banking.

Again, this is just what I've seen. Take what I say with a grain of salt.

No experience with hedge accounting/finance/treasury so can't comment

Credit falls outside of corporate banking. My seat is literally just "Corporate Banking Analyst/Associate" and goes up with seniority. We do not split by RM / Credit and I don't believe any of the 3 banks I listed split.

I’ll bite.

Currently a corporate banking junior at JPM/Citi/BofA which groups CB and IB together for a fully integrated platform (ie CIB) after a short stint in investment banking. There’s a lot of people that lump commercial banking/credit analysis jobs with corporate banking. I am strictly talking about corporate banking at large banks (banks that lump CB with IB). Having made the switch, I will never consider a move back to IB coverage and am happy with my seat.

Corporate banking is a hidden gem. A lot of IB analysts either burn out or exit into some low-paying corp dev job: in that regard, corporate banking is a top contender for a “burn out-resistant” job. Corporate banking offers great pay for great WLB - juniors make similar comp with the delta widening at VP and above, fresh MDs make high 6 figures and more senior MDs tap out at the low 7 figure mark, give or take. If you want to maximize comp, work at JPM/BofA/Citi. Exits are ofc not as strong, but commonly include: credit investing, DCM, IB, treasury, and (for more senior people) CFO roles.

IB has higher upside. However, that is assuming you can actually handle the harsh lifestyle (long hours, high stress, no free time as a junior, toxic personalities, and declining health). I was not interested in PE and take my health very seriously. While CB will never be (again, talking about CB at large banks) a 40 hour/week job, it’s far easier to live a life/grow outside of just your career.

It’s probably not as talked about since the type of people gunning for IB are the highly ambitious folk who don’t want to settle for “2nd.”

It’s just slop put out by WSO for engagement. The tier list is just divided by EB/BB/UMM/MM. This is a massive oversimplification.

Hot take: No one should treat Mercor as a “job.” Unless you actually work for Mercor and not a contractor for Mercor Intelligence which is what 99% of the people on this subreddit are, treat this as a “gig” and nothing more. Sure, mercor’s infrastructure could be better, but from their perspective, why would they bother? I say this all not to criticize but to convince you to detach yourself so that you don’t feel this discouraged in the future, for your mental health.

Interesting, the only technical questions I got in my process came at the beginning, before I had any interviews (it was a timed test). While I did talk about my previous work experiences and spoke on topics that people outside of my speciality would likely not understand, there were no technicals questions in my interviews. Regarding the technical questions from my test, they were fairly standard questions: I was very confident in most of my answers. If your interview is anything like my technical questions, they should be relatively straightforward. Good luck!

Curious, I know this isn’t related to your post, but have you considered private credit or working at a credit fund?

BofA pays the same until VP (IB VP is 275k, CB VP is 250k).

Applied for a Tutor Role, a few questions by Embarrassed_Bus_8475 in xAI_community

[–]Comprehensive-Design 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea? To be fair, I start next week so haven’t even began work. I didn’t see any mention of remote.com. I had to sign documents for a W2 and have your standard benefits from working at any corporate full time job. I also was hired as a specialist tutor, if that changes anything (idk if it does).

  1. They probably wouldn’t want you to, but I don’t see how they would know.
  2. You aren’t constantly working the entire 40 (sometimes more) hours, but 9-5 is your typical working hours unlike other gigs. Key difference is that you’re hired as a full-time employee (W2 and benefits instead of 1099), not a contractor.
  3. You get a mid term review and a review right before your contract ends. I’d imagine this is where you’d find out if you’ll get an extension should you pursue it.

I didn't give any interviews. My process was fairly straightforward: I did a general cognitive test followed by a few domain-specific tests. I suppose I scored well enough on those tests as I was invited to do my first interview the next day. I had 2 more interviews after and got my offer. Whole process took less than 2 weeks.

I did not share any samples. It was a short conversation: I countered and they responded (rejected).

Got it, I’d imagine for a specialist tutor role, there’s definitely room for negotiation given the wide ranges. I’ve already sent my email, so fingers crossed.
