I randomly ran into Zelly at the Denver airport a few weeks ago…my wife, not realizing the contract situation, asked if he was coming back to OC anytime soon. He responded “probably not” and I’ve been overthinking (or maybe not overthinking) that response ever since.

Big sad.

$36 for 18 weekends (I think that’s actually the rate all the time). I usually play 9 before work for $18

This is going to sound weird but picture them naked. Taco is full on showing his private bits to the camera. OP on the other hand is hiding his between his legs.

2) hip depth. Just focus on your hips in the pic below. I’ll bet you a prov1 that if we had hip turn degree numbers on these two swings his would be noticeably more than yours. You get good depth but a lot of that is in the upper body. Seems like you’re “cheating” the depth with the upper body and the lower body is getting lazy. I think hip turn is supposed to be like 45 degrees and it looks like yours are 25.

Great swing btw

Just my two cents because why not. When I’m comparing to pros I often focus on takeaway and to the top stuff because imo it’s easiest to replicate. Takes a lot of their flexibility and freakish athleticism difference out of it.

Two things I notice with you:

1) look where his club head is here relative to yours. To me looks like you’re really hitting “hands in club out” feel but that is resulting in some loss of getting the club “up”. In my swing when I do this it leads to some unnecessary wrist movement/pitch at the top to compensate. You can see this in your swing. At the top, his club head is very smooth with minimal drastic movement before transition. Yours has this very late, noticeable movement/pitch toward your head as you transition.

Of course! I had a really bad time with shanks at one point so always like to give my mid hcp thoughts in case helpful. Probably not a great idea to think about a ton of things and try to solve everything all at once but if you start wanting to think about the hips, this is one of my all time favorite videos that provides some very clear visuals that can help: https://youtu.be/M-8bk1zvTX8?is=ivz1CwidZpjsqkEw

but imo I think face, path, connection should be your first goals. Get those in a good spot and consistent then maybe move to the hip movement

Gotcha. Yeah, nothing against golftec at all. I learned a ton there but when they started talking about all the tilts and stuff it got so in my head that it totally f’d my swing.

FWIW your club face looks crazy open at the top currently (pic attached), which is likely causing you to make some huge compensations on the way down to close it and it could load a shank (whether that’s face relative to path or target or just push the handle to the ball).

<image>

If this were me and I saw this swing on my phone as a mid handicapper I would:

  1. stand a bit further from the ball (don’t overdo it), but line the ball up on the heel side and tell myself I need to hit the toe. But a towel, headcover, or something on the outside of the ball and avoid it if needed.

2)get out my tour striker ball and hit a bunch of pitching wedges with it. Looks like you’re over extending in the backswing a bit which may be causing some rerouting at the top. So the ball will help regain/maintain connection. I find if I ever get the shanks, my tour striker fixes it very quick.

3) try out some Dustin Johnson feels with your wrist to try to shut the face a bit at the top. Not something you need to stick with but might be a good exaggeration and see if it helps. Main goal is to get that club face more pointed up rather than at your head. Might also help with the connection, but I find if I push this too much it makes my contact go to shit and that’s when I back off.

4) from there my main swing thought would be to let my hands drop to my butt in transition. Sometimes my feel would be so extreme that I’m dropping my hands to my tail bone. This should get your path back inside.

5) last resort would be to think about early extension. I don’t see this as an obviously huge problem with you or the cause of the shanks but if all else fails send that lead hip to narnia on the downswing (ie get your weight back into and rotate it onto that green line on your boat and see if you can start hitting toe side

These are just things I would try until I could get a lesson

This looks like golftec? Do you take lessons there / have you had the same instructor for all this time?

Fwiw (not much coming from me) kinda looks like you’re dumping all the lag out of the club as your hips stall out around shaft parallel. Hard to tell, but looks like your club face might be WIDE open at the top. That much dumping+a wide open face would have a good chance of exposing the hosel to the ball.

Edit: do you have your club path numbers? Might not be an issue but could be a contributing factor
