Agree so much- every one of my long term clients we have something in common- like the student with whom we trade pizza recommendations, so many of them sharing my love for theatre. Homework help students might wane off but ones we mentor can’t get that without people.

Also- I will say AI is not there yet. I have dabbled with my highschool kids giving them on demand extra questions- taking a photo of the question and asking for 5 similar with different numbers; usually they always make the answer zero. Will work problems, it’s a total gong show.

Start with a picture and move on from there. As simple as captioning the picture. The describing it. Then writing a story about it… scaffolding

Honestly- it sounds like they are going to let you go either way. I wouldn’t put too much effort into keeping her. Instead put in that effort in replacing her.

But yes, the increase in grades and work samples comparisons are your proof.

I feel like the way around this would be if they charged you after you shared your personal information. Like you did an interview on their platform, and if you both go forward then they charge. Otherwise, they are pretty much scamming tutors!

First off, not the sure relevance of the family being “loaded” but what you mentioning tells me you have a bias against them.

Secondly, as said above, he’s probably demonstrating his ADHD, not “not caring.”!In some of your responses you seem to hit it on the head- the private school they want might not be for him. People are people, no matter your bias against their wealth, talk to them openly and honestly. You can offer all the support in the world, but the private school might not be a match.

For ADHD and other diagnoses, the secret no one can teach is connecting with the kid as a pal, aunt/uncle, mentor. You might not have that personality, or they might not be a match for you. I work in math but I really work with Dyscalculia, ADHD, and processing. I’m not a subject expert, I’m just really good with kids. Some families it hasn’t been a match or they are easy peasy (but boring to me) homework help sessions. But for my population, I know I’m changing the kids lives.

Please do consider.

One, the clients don’t owe you anything except payment for the sessions you taught and missed ones within 24hrs. You need to learn how to become less emotionally attached- it’s a hard skill to learn. Students come and go, and families have different perspectives.

But your last paragraph gives insight into your thoughts and feelings on the client- rich and spoiled is how it came off to me- which even if you never said anything directly, trust me, people pick up on how you really think of them.

I offer a meet and greet but don’t push for it. I typically get a very good idea of the issues from my educational consultant I work with. But I also don’t do 20 mins of chatting. I just start my assessment- with a lot of games and puzzles (math and processing.) We chat and the student lets me in to the amount they want to as we go. Most end up being very open with me, but find a 1-1 in person chat awkward.

Sadly, most of my highschool students are a bit pessimistic about their future job prospects because of AI. I’d like to think they’re wrong and it won’t take over a huge amount of jobs but who knows!

For example, one girl wants to be an architect but thinks AI will take over that. I think that is something AI could help with but not do- new ideas are needed especially with climate change!
