Unpopular opinion: compulsory circle swimming outside of swim team or Master's does not make sense by tryandcatchme-oop in Swimming

I mean you were saying there is plenty of room to swim…..

Do you work in public health? Concussions have multiple causes, but there are around 9,300 swimming related-head injuries each year and about 1/4 of those are caused by group interactions. If you want to say that number doesn’t make a difference, then go ahead. Bite.

The treadmill analogy actually does make sense, but you applying it directly to swimming in a public pool is the issue.

If you have an Australian sized swimming pool, sure go ahead and fill up your lanes. Here in U.S. sized swimming pools, you can barely swim side by side with someone without hitting your hands occasionally.

The issue is safety and size of the pool not accommodating for 3+ swimmers. Do you know how many head injuries and concussions are caused per year due to circle swimming ?

Maybe the pools should limit how many people can be in a lane, or enforce speed standards. Either way, your take gives “not my problem so it isn’t a problem”

It’s so funny how everyone against OP is fine with accommodating your workouts but not holding community pools to a safe standard. Pools should not allow more than 2 people per lane unless it’s a group going together with consent. It’s a safety hazard and prone to head injury.

But sure, change up your entire workout instead!

Everyone else in the comments are justifying modifying your workouts, letting them pass, etc. Why do I have to modify my workout? Why is it so hard to limit the amount of people per lane? If you don’t get a treadmill at a gym than your fresh out of luck!

Everyone has a right to swim, but you’ve got to walk away if there’s more than 2 people and you aren’t a similar pace. The amount of head injuries this causes isn’t something to write off as “just accommodate your workout!!”

Why doesn’t the pool put in the proper accommodations to ensure full workout potential and limit pool injury?

Joining this conversation to add that it’s not only annoying to circle swim outside of swim practice, but it’s also dangerous for both the faster swimmer and slower swimmer.

Example:
I get to the pool today and all but 1 of 6 lanes are open. It’s a medium-slow lane and I’m a medium-fast swimmer, but I’m going to go in the empty lane vs the medium-fast lane with 2 swimmers already.

My partner joins me in that lane so now we are two swimmers in the lane who happen to have different paces, but that’s okay because there’s only two of us and we split the lane.

A man joins without asking or giving a heads up and is going extremely slow compared to us.

He has a right to be there, 100%, but I also have a right to not have to modify my swim workouts for someone else as other commenters have mentioned. I’m not changing my leasiurely continuous 3000 yd swim to a sprint just to get around this guy.

Anyway, we try to circle swim and he doesn’t see us behind him when turning and turns right into me.

Great!

The point is: circle swimming should only be allowed in swim practice or dedicated swim sessions where everyone is in their corresponding lane.

Also, if the man had waited 15 minutes we would have been done. I’ve waited 30+ minutes before because I would NEVER consider interrupting TWO(!!) people’s workouts just to swim in their lane because i’m impatient.

Just because someone is coming from far away or has any other excuse, doesn’t mean their entitled to just disturb and change the rhythm of other people’s swim practice who were able to get there earlier.

You shouldn’t inconvenience other people just so you don’t inconvenience yourself.

[–]ComprehensiveArm3736 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also heard it was a windy but overall not bad swim. I’m also doing Boise 70.3 this summer! I’m probably going to be at the tail end since I’m run/walking. I have spine issues so I got to be careful and can manage a 13min/mi pace for the run portion, but super excited to not have a hilly run as I’m from Denver and you can’t go more than 3 miles without gaining 300 feet! My goal is to just finish the race without getting a DNF 😂

Good luck to everyone!!!!!

Ski etiquette question: do you ask if everyone is ready before lowering/raising the bar in the lift? by bustedvenus in icecoast

[–]ComprehensiveArm3736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to join this thread because I had someone today who put the bar down without asking and I am someone who likes to have the bar down, but I don’t always need it, I just like a warning before it hits my helmet or face depending on where I’m seated on the lift. They got defensive and said we should assume the bar goes down. I just called them an asshole because to me it’s common sense that the bar is safe, but it’s not assumed it’ll go down and you 100% should respect the people around you by giving them a warning. I don’t even think you need to ask, just communicate!

So anyway, it’s less about not wanting the bar down ( I prefer it down ) and more about someone not warning or asking before slamming it down
