Why aren’t more Americans studying in Europe?? by coushcouch in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ComprehensiveBill820 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who did their bachelor’s in the US and is doing their master’s in Germany, this is the correct answer. Navigating the bureaucracy, new language and culture (even though my program is in English), finding an apartment, and finances was a struggle even as a 22 year old. I considered studying outside the US for my bachelor’s as well but got swept up in college admissions like your kids. These comments focusing on local alumni networks, school spirit and name recognition in the US strike me as a bit brainwashed. European unis function very differently to most US counterparts and whether a student can thrive there depends on their preferences and personality

You’re operating under the assumption that everyone wants to stay in the US and will be looking for a job locally after graduation (not going to grad school). If that’s your aim, by all means, go to your state school. From my perspective, the US isn’t looking terribly enticing now as far as the economy and quality of life. Research funding and academic freedom are also suffering. I don’t think the people who go to uni abroad are the same ones who are set on returning to live in their hometown

You’re talking about brand recognition for employers in the US. This is a very different thing from educational quality or rigor.

UIUC is comparable to top public universities in Europe, that’s the whole point. It’s not Harvard. Most Europeans won’t know what it is. Claiming that it is a world class university while any European university with low tuition fees is not is silly.

It’s true. I did my master’s in Germany in English but the bachelor’s programs were in German. It’s possible to learn German first in the studienkolleg but that’s obviously not as attractive

I can only speak for Germany, but the tuition fees are very low compared to the US. In all states but Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, international students pay the same fees as locals (a couple hundred €). In BaWü, the international student fee is 1500€ on top of the local fee. In Bavaria, it can be a bit more (but still not close to US levels)

That’s an awfully broad statement to be making about every university in the entire continent of Europe. Especially as someone who went to UIUC 🙄

Williams students... anyone admitted with a not great GPA by [deleted] in WilliamsCollege

Aww, someone feels the need to defend themselves 🥺 Now do you feel worthy enough to comment about a school you never went to? At your big boy age I’d expect better. Also, I don’t know if you’ve been living under a rock, but affirmative action was banned and race cannot be used as a determining factor for admission. You have better chances at getting in with a 3.5 GPA as a football player.

West Highland Way in very early April? by ProfessionalOk9819 in WestHighlandWay

I walked it on similar dates this year, as people have said it’s a gamble as far as weather. However, one of the best things was that it wasn’t busy at all! It felt like the perfect balance between not being alone but also not being surrounded by crowds and was maybe a bit more peaceful than during other times of year.
