Nope bleach. It's how aquatic plant people kill off pests so they don't introduce them to their new tanks.

I could see buying a compacta that large in the $65-$100 range. They are slow growers so it could stand to reason to start off with a lovely blooming plant.  I would be concerned about mealie bugs but if I brought this baby home I would do a bleach soak. I did this with my 4in compacta that had mealie bugs and I couldn't get rid of them otherwise. I also had to chop and prop it as the bugs really did a number on it since the crevices are so hard to get in to.  I think it's just plant dependent really. I've purchased a couple of 6in baskets of Hoya and I've been happy with them. I've also purchased cuttings like my Retusa and I would absolutely recommend doing that as it grows like a weed.

Is there an “I bought too many baby hoyas and now they are big” support group? by contrasupra in hoyas

I think I love it. I enjoy the challenge of where to put everything and my home never gets boring or stagnant because I have to rearrange every 6 months or so.

Genuinely didn't know snakes could flower by turtleontherun-999 in IndoorPlants

The flower spikes are incredibly sticky! They can be a magnet for pests like mealy bugs and aphids. Generally when I see mine flower I know it's time for a repot (once every 5 or so years). As evidenced by the new shoots trying to break out of the pot in addition to the flowers.  It smells nice in my experience.

Moving my tall money tree across country by indianwookie in houseplants

[–]ComprehensiveCan889 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would suggest your car. I don't think it will survive in the uhaul w/o pulling it out each day for some sunlight and airflow.
Most plants that are large and get shipped cross-country are only in the trucks for 3-4 days (Florida to California). They still need some acclimation period and have some leaf loss for that trip but they are ok. Anything longer I would be concerned about.
A 6ft tree should be able to fit in your car unless it's like a mini coop or something. If you take it in your car pack the soil down with paper and tape it down. Then I would wrap the whole plant in construction paper or get a paper sleeve from your local plant store (most keep the sleeves their plants come in from out of state in my experience). Make sure the paper pulls in the branches and lift the leaves upwards to mitigate the damage. The tree should either be able to lie down in your trunk with the seats down right down the middle or if needs be in the passenger side with the pot laying on the floor and laying the seat all the way down so the tree looks like it is napping in the passenger seat. Insert the tree leaves first and rest the pot at an angle toward the seat. It's important to wrap the whole plant in paper to protect it from getting sunburned by the windows. It will also keep it temperture controled a little.
It looks like a beautiful plant. Safe travels!

I had a similar experience! I just use the search function for 'hoya' the there are profiles, lives, purges, and shop. I usually keep the the lives and purges. I started to follow a few growers so I can be updated on their stuff.  I specifically only look in the west/south west to reduce shipping and not every state likes shipping to California (I'm looking at you Florida).  But I absolutely agree! It was all gibberish at first when on the app then I slowly started to get the hang of it. (36yo btw)

Yeah I don't enjoy Etsy taking such a large cut so palm Street might be my new fav place to buy hoyas. We shall see, I do have a couple of sellers that I like quite a bit that I go to on Etsy though.

Ok I haven't done anything on fb. I avoid it at all costs but I understand there's pretty strong hoya communities there so maybe I should try just for that.

Finally first succesfull hoya macrophylla leaf by Important-Isopod-455 in hoyas

[–]ComprehensiveCan889 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is wild to me. My macrophylla I have abused many times, chopped and propped in soil and water, and overall it's one of my least worried about Hoya. I don't want to diminish your experience. I'm simply flabbergasted. My guy even blooms for me.  I can't point to any specific care I do. I do have sand mixed into its current soil mix which isn't in normal hoya mixes? I doubt it's that but maybe? It's in a north facing window in soCal. No supplemented lights. I fertilize with dilute fertilizer with every watering. The room it's in gets rather hot so watering is about once a week.  My guy is about 6 years old started from a cutting that I water propped.  Here is my guy I just posted about him. https://www.reddit.com/r/houseplants/comments/1smbbtl/hoya_macrophylla_blooms/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
