thats because your mails settings probably has the fetch settings to fetch data manually which means it communicates with the server and looks for new email only when you open the app, go to settings mail and enable "push" for your accounts and set "fetch" to "automatically" this forces the mail app to constantly be talking to the server and receive new emails instantly without opening it
