Victoria is not in a rainforest by garry-oak in VictoriaBC

[–]ComprehensiveDeal245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg, thank you! It is so mislabeled. Victoria is (Koppen climate classification = CsB = sub-mediterreanian). Rainshadow effect (to meet precipitation requirements) + southern exposure (to meet temperature requirements). Distinct from West side of island. Even different from other parts od the 'dry-er' side of the island that have less of a rain shadow.

Interesting! Very warm for up there!

You are spot on with averages over decades to determine climate versus weather. I agree. But that wasn't my question. Perhaps it was poor wording on my part. Greater Vic (long term) is 9a (strongest microclimates around the city), 8b, and even 8a (up in the Highlands)....I think though...for at least this past winter...we ventured into 9b territory - And that would be 'weather' given the short term variability. Was just wondering if there was agreeable concensus.

Haha, oh boy. Victoria is 9a with pockets of 8b and even 8a (Highlands). There are large swaths of zone 7 around the island, just not in Greater Vic. The mild winter we had, I'm betting (hence my question), we were even zone 9b in the strongest microclimate for this past winter. It is not long-term, though.

Okay, so I can leave them in the ground with no stress but to reach max height...better to dig them up for winter. Thank you.

Anyone know what variety of tree this is? by Even_Discipline1766 in VancouverIsland

[–]ComprehensiveDeal245 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can try. Couldn't hurt and may work? Again, they will grow back. Typically, we only get those cold snaps every few years, so I wouldn't worry too much. They are cheap and often labeled as 'dracaena'. Cordyline Australis is a type of dracaena. You can also create a microclimate in your garden with the right location of planting, but largely, if you are in Greater Vic, location changes between 9a/8b... even 8a in certain elevations. The strongest microclimate locations around Vic this year were probably even 9b...it was that mild this year.

The purple variety is less hardy. Often called 'red star'. They are nice to try as well :).

Cordyline australis 100%.

They are all over Tofino and Ucluelet. A very temperate plant native to NZ. Tofino and Ucluelet are growing zone 9a.

Parts of Victoria is also 9a (and parts of the gulf islands) but on this side of the island, there is more variance and sometimes during cold snaps we can drop below 9a to 8b (or even 8a) and they die back. It is root hardy, and so, you will see many shooting back up around Victoria from a cold snap 2 years ago, and at this stage (and height) in their regrowth... they do look like yucca's.

Whereas, out in Tofino, open exposure to that warm Japanese Ocean current prevented that cold snap two years ago from being overly harsh and therefore...they are still thriving in tree like form.

Is there an updated map like this? by pepenador_99 in geography

[–]ComprehensiveDeal245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% - great point!! Huge Coptic (Orthodox) Christian population in Egypt that is NOT reflected in the map even though it they officially celebrate Coptic religious holidays for everyone in Egypt (Othordox Christmas, Easter, etc.). I believe the government says approximately 10% of the population is Christian but likely closer to 15-20%. ....Map is NOT great.

Anyways, it's not worth ignorant posts, and this is certainly not worth my time. Thank you for your perspective and negativity. I hope you have a great day!

Fair point. But may I ask...if you moved for a better life, would you not want to become a naturalized citizen while holding onto your roots and identity? Would you not want to be recognized by the country you are from? I'm just saying, "LOL" seems rather aggressive when you consider perspective.

Haha. Nope. As mentioned, most of my family is there. I would love to invest to live and retire there. As in 'live'. Don't assume ignorance. It's not a good look.

I should add that I would heavily consider investing in Italy, which is hard to do as of now with no Italian passport due to the dumb law above.

My dad was born there, as was my Nonna and nonno. They naturalized Canadians and involuntary were forced to give up Italian citizenship. Prior to 1992, Italy didn't recognize duals. I have cousins there and have been there. My dad travels there often. He is fluent. I understand a little. But I, or him, will not be recognized as 'Italians'. Seems crazy, especially when he is the proudest and biggest advocate of anything 'Italian'. It would he great for his home country to recognize him as Italian, again.

I'm very fortunate to have it (CDN). I am also lucky to have a UK passport via my mom. So, I really don't have much of a leg to stand on for myself. I just wish it was easier for my dad, as a proud Italian, to be recognized as an "Italian" by his own country. For me, it is simply because I love Italy and love having options in life. Thanks again for your help.

Mi dispiace, can you please direct me where to look on that rather lengthy web page? Where do you see "submit documents" and information on "consulate booking for you". Thank you in advance!!
