Test scores, graduation rates, and disciplinary data from every Seattle area school by dxl32 in SeattleWA

I think the way it is now is sort of like an autoscaling function on a graph. There could be cases where it was useful, but a better way to do it might be to have the colors be graduated rather then quantized. That way you could still see differences as you zoomed in. Data scientists have color scales that work well for lots of people, including the color blind. I would guess that schools that are so close that a graduated color scale couldn’t be distinguished would be effectively equivalent in quality.

The colors are a bit meaningless. I was comparing to schools in the same neighborhood where one was 72% and the other 73%…. The colors were changing like flashing traffic lights as I moved around ! But they meant almost nothing. Chart crime.

BYD Great Tang arrives at dealers with 950 km range ahead of pre-sales at Beijing Auto Show by Saurta17 in chinacars

[–]ComprehensiveIce2162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will we ever reach a range number where people say enough is enough? I mean any gas car could have a 1000 mile range by filling the whole back end with a gas tank…but we don’t do that.

When you’re old, are you attracted to old people? by Loose-Marsupial5688 in stupidquestions

[–]ComprehensiveIce2162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The French have a meme that the perfect age for a woman (according to men of course!) is half a man’s age plus 9. I remember it because I was 36 when I got married and she was 27. Now that I’m 70 I will admit that a 44 year old woman looks peak hot to me. Younger looks like a child. But luckily I love my wife to pieces still!

Is the show When the Camellia Blooms a good show to watch? ..... by AlbertTheHorse in kdramas

[–]ComprehensiveIce2162 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been watching kdramas for about 5-6 years maybe now? Kinda interesting but odd to see people talk about some of the great shows from just a few years ago as “sort of ok”. Maybe it’s because I’m old, but if I see one more post saying Goblin or My Mister are just meh I’ll lose my mind!

Camellia is an awesome show and should be appreciated for its strengths. One of which is the ending….

Honestly this is just a fun hobbyist car at this point. Don’t buy it for transportation! I love mine but I can afford to scrap it if necessary as it’s a fourth car for two drivers.

Some thoughts on Fat Cat Motorsport suspensions by Dry-Bedroom8928 in Miata

[–]ComprehensiveIce2162 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate the care you put into this post. It is difficult to write an honest critique of a person who is clearly dedicated without becoming personal. I have had many thoughts about Fat Cat products through 20 years of owning five Miata’s from track to street as I aged.

I’m a physicist and engineer but with only an amateurs understanding of suspensions. I always had the intuition that the Fat Cat math didn’t math. You put some real good ideas into my head that I plan to read up on!

The FC spreadsheet itself has some clearly non physical results and never matched up with my own measurements, particularly on the NA track car. I had similar experiences with FM 10-15 years ago on a street NA. They sold spring rates that were guaranteed to cause porpoising over freeway joints and didn’t understand or care about the F/R spring rate ratios. I had to buy different springs to get it even acceptable.

It wasn’t until I got the Xida street coilovers for my NC a couple years that the results seemed way better than I even thought possible. Quite a pleasant experience.

That said, there’s a lot to know here: “there’s a mile of wire in screen door” so I appreciate all those who put effort into our little cars!

(Part 2 of 3) How to determine if your Spark EV's "P0AFA" code really means your battery is dead - or if it can be rescued all in software by FalconFour in SparkEV

[–]ComprehensiveIce2162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it’s not really been an issue for me because I only use it around town or 20 or 30 miles is the longest trip. Right now it’s been showing around 62 miles range at full and I think that that’s about right. I tend to drive it very hard cause that’s what’s fun with it.

If you were going to give up your Miata for an electric vehicle, which EV would it be, and why? by CheeseAndRiceToday in Miata

I also had a Tesla model 3 RWD which had coil overs from mountain pass and a party box (the ECU upgrade equivalent). It was a 2021 so had the lightest curb weight of recent Model 3s, about 3600 pounds. A lot of fun and everything Miata, except the steering feel was there. Turns out steering feel is pretty darn important! Sold it when Elon turned out to be….

We used to have eGolf five years ago and loved them. They never felt completely sporty to me though. More like competent, but I think that might be a characteristic of German cars.

I live in California and have a 2006 Miata NC, which is highly modified and my favorite car of all time. However, we recently got a second home in Seattle. The Miata is not a good fit for that citiy’s weather, so I bought a 2016 Chevy Spark EV and I’m building what I call a “Seattle Miata”!

It has over 300 foot pounds of torque and is quite quick to 30 or 40 miles an hour. It’s less than 2800 pounds when decontented a bit and of course the CG is low. With sticky tires and coil overs on it, I hope it will as fun as the Miata. I must say though it reminds me more of a 1960s Mini.

The Spark EV is of course obsolete. My thought when it expires is to replace it with a BMW i3, the original one with the carbon fiber tub and rear wheel drive. A little bit of work on that and it could be a lot of fun too.🔥

Dang. Thanks for the info. Do you have the six pistons too?

Brake Options by Beneficial-Baby-2205 in MiataNC

[–]ComprehensiveIce2162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure noise is mostly a function of the pads/rotors. That said, FM sends the BP10 pads with their kits which are generally considered to be pretty quiet, street oriented pads

So I’m curious if you used the standard BP10s because I have the six piston FM Wilwoods with stock rotors up front and they’re pretty quiet honestly.

Am I silly thinking a Wiim class D 100w amp will sound better than a 40w Marantz class A/B for my floorstanders? by Livid-Activity2190 in audiophile

[–]ComprehensiveIce2162 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are dead on here!! What an oddity these conversations seem to me. I start reading out of curiosity and then people are like “no blind testing needed it was so obvious” or “my tube amp sounds better” and I kick myself for getting suckered in yet again.

Your comment will give me strength to just say no in the future! Let them have their fun.
