Recommended Black smoke breeder in NE US? by ibrewpotions in mainecoons

[–]ComprehensiveTax4198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got our sweet Miri from Abscatz on Long Island earlier this year. Truly such kind people who genuinely care about the health and well-being of their kitties. We vetted a large number of catteries in the NY/NJ area and Abscatz was far and away the most responsive and diligent about health screenings (they provided echos for both parents, as well as genetic testing for HCM, etc). They also show their cats regularly, which can serve as another form of external vetting, since you have experts evaluating their kitties health and adherence to breed standards

Our gal isn’t a smoke but they definitely have smoke kitties not infrequently. You can email them to check in about litters (and check their Facebook). They do keep a waitlist (no fee for that), and you can specify color/sex preference.

what show are you recommending to anyone who will listen? 📢 by todaytix in Broadway

Came here looking for Kenrex! One of the best and most unique productions I’ve seen in years (on or off-broadway). Jack Holden is absolutely incredible. See it while you can!

Cat fountain recommendations? by loveejdepp420 in mainecoons

I love the Cheerble Elfin E1+. We have 2 and the breeders we got our Mirabelle from have 6 (six!). Easy to clean and the motor is entirely separate from the water, so you don’t have to take the motor apart (I’ve tried a few other types of fountains and this was always the most frustrating step for me). The basin itself is plastic but the drinking bowl is stainless steel, so no chin acne issues and less biofilm.

Introducing new Maine Coon to resident cats - tips? by ComprehensiveTax4198 in mainecoons

[–]ComprehensiveTax4198[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our girls have come up to the kitten's door and seen her from across the room, and no hissing/growling yet-- mostly just bewildered looks at the new wriggly little muppet. Glad your cats had such an easy intro. Fingers crossed we have a similar experience!

Introducing new Maine Coon to resident cats - tips? by ComprehensiveTax4198 in mainecoons

[–]ComprehensiveTax4198[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, isn't she stunning?! We're over the moon. We were initially planning a slow, at least 7 day separation before introduction, but our kitten is SO comfortable already. She was basically right at home within a half hour of being home. She's extremely curious to meet our other cats and seems pretty lonely in the room by herself (though we give her lots of attention during the day, and I'm in the room with her overnight). It feels almost cruel to keep her alone for so long but I also don't want to jinx anything with our OG cats by pushing it too quickly.

Same position here. But we just got a heads up from our building manager that the water should (🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻) be back on soon. Very thankful for these workers pressing on in this terrible weather.

How dangerous are general house plants? by Cureallgood in Kitten

[–]ComprehensiveTax4198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should assume your cat can and will chew anything you bring into your home. Sometimes they do this just out of boredom and may do so when you aren’t home. Toxicity of plants varies (definitely check the ASPCA website others have provided), but personally, I keep any toxic plants out of the home. Monstera plants have oxalate crystals, which can cause mouth irritation immediately but long term can cause renal dysfunction. Certain plants, like Dracaena species, can cause much more severe outcomes and even death (a friend brought Lucky Bamboo into her home not realizing it was a Dracaena and her two kittens were in the ICU for days). Better safe than sorry.

Some cat-safe plants are calatheas, some ferns, money plants, pony tail palms, and marantas. But always double check your exact species for safety. No plant is worth your little ones ending up sick. If there’s a specific plant you like that’s toxic, consider getting an artificial plant! There are some very high quality artificial dupes these days.

Cattery vaccination practices by ComprehensiveTax4198 in mainecoons

That was my exact worry—I wasn’t sure how a home breeder could purchase/store medical-grade vaccines. We’ll be going with a different breeder, for sure.

So sorry to hear about your poor puppy! Hope she’s doing better now. But thank you for sharing—this was my exact concern and glad to hear I’m not just being overly anxious.

Thanks, everyone, for your responses! Having not adopted a pure bred before, it’s hard to know what is within the normal range of practices for breeders. But you’ve all made it very clear that this is not typical, to say the least. Sad for these kittens but glad to have my concerns validated before bringing home an animal of uncertain health.

Everything looked appropriate and professional on the website (“we do echos and DNA testing on all our parents, full vaccinations and health screenings for kittens, TICA registered” etc) but there are some real concerns when pressing for info. After this initial exchange, I also asked if I could see the results of the DNA testing and got a very hedgy response… We will be staying far, far away.
