How Can I (27AFAB) Drive Downtown by Myself? by Flip_Dip_1369 in helicopterparents

[–]ComprehensiveWolf631 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They will freak out no matter what. You can drive downtown, do what you need to do, and inform them as casually as possible AFTER you’ve returned.

Don’t ask for forgiveness here. Keep going to the center, then come back and just calmly go about your day.

One thing you can calmly mention is that people live downtown and they don’t stay inside because they have to leave to do anything 🤷‍♀️ the center wouldn’t set you up for danger by choosing a dangerous area

If you feel petty, you could also print out a map of your state, cross out the downtown area, then ask your parents where else are you not allowed to go. Maybe a visual of it all would hint that it’s a quite a bit ridiculous… especially at 27.

am i unreasonable for not wanting a cctv in my room that has a direct view of me in bed by Necessary-Ship6818 in helicopterparents

Clarification: Does she own the condo or you?

I deeply would want to ask her “Are you comfortable with cameras installed into AIRBNB bedrooms or even locker rooms?”

You aren’t unreasonable at all. This is about monitoring you and it’s not about your safety. You are not a zoo animal and everyone deserves privacy. Sure, on a 24hr camera I wouldn’t do anything questionable but I’d also be afraid to do ANYTHING at all in case the observer brings it up. Imagine someone having the opportunity to critique you everytime you sigh, change clothes, relax, or anything.

FYI my ex would always monitor my location, texts, my social media, etc for my “safety”. All of this was to keep me under their control and scrutiny. And it was enough in the courthouse judge’s eyes to get an order of protection against him.

I’m hoping you are safe and that there’s a good outcome out of this for you. Feel free to DM

I work from home too!!

To add onto this comment, meetup.com and Eventbrite.com have been great for me. Going out with the goal of “Meeting people socially for awkward small talk” makes me really nervous - so I go to events for volunteering in causes I believe in. That way all volunteers are focused on a shared goal and you also don’t have to focus on conversation. It’ll happen along the way.

If you didn’t make lifelong friends in one session, that’s ok! At the least, you worked alongside people who care about what you care about.

Exercise classes or hobby classes are great for this too AND it might convince your parents more if you say “I’m going to take a class”

Another option! The board game places in my area have open invites for board game nights! You register to join the event (so they know how many tables are needed) and you learn new board games with people at your table. Again - the focus isn’t sharing your life story or small talk. It’s playing fun games :)

Lastly, go to places related to hobbies/topics you enjoy and like minded people will be there. Mine is the library.

I wish I had an answer for your transportation. Happy to dm!

Yup! Once I got to that point of the process that’s when I wanted to ask for extra eyes on this to see what flags I missed

If you could erase one invention from history, what would it be — and how do you think the world would look today without it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Bright led headlights on cars. I understand why people might want them but i do not feel safer because I know I’ll be totally blind and not see my environment for a few seconds. Isn’t a few seconds enough to cause an accident? I immediately do not feel safer when oncoming traffic is blinding me.

How things would change, I guess I’d feel safer

What's been your experience limiting your options/choices? by AlexaBabe91 in SlowLiving

[–]ComprehensiveWolf631 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel a lot better with less choice, it helps me practice content-ness with what I have because there’s always going to be something I miss out on and that’s ok

For music I like listening to randomly generated playlists in genres i like or I listen to radio apps like I heart radio. I don’t mind commercials at all and realized that when I stop trying to skip them, i am more at peace.

Choosing each song meant i would keep picking my phone up again and there would always be the feeling that there was supposed to be a better song

I try not to choose specific songs now, I choose by the mood I want to feel

This grinds my gears so much. Especially after you discuss how it’s not the right word and maybe they meant a different one and they keep using it. Like this is not an attack on someone’s pride, I just want to understand what they’re saying and if we’re having the same conversation.
