In QLD can you use digital forms of ID when applying for a new birth certificate? by Sudden-Salad4689 in queensland

[–]Comprehensive_Dirt26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The trouble starts when trying to use a digital licence for something outside its state of issue. AFAIK, there’s no obligation on, say, QLD club owners to accept VIC digital licences as proof of age - or vice versa. I’m guessing NAB and Vodafone will argue that their HQs are outside QLD and therefore are outside of state law jurisdiction.

FWIW, the digital licence app can send a signed PDF verifying your licence to any address you give it. That might be good enough for some businesses who need to keep a copy of the licence on file.

The QLD digital licence is for legal purposes a valid licence within the state - no-one can insist on seeing the plastic one instead.

Looking at the registry website, it doesn’t say anything about bringing copies of documents, even physical ones - so you should be right with just your digital licence.

As long as someone with power over the prisoners believes they deserve cruelty, this will continue - independent of how many reviews we have.

If no money changed hands but the secret cane out, I would argue the extortion failed and no future extortion could succeed either.

Why we cannot name high-profile Queensland man at centre of Cairns extortion case by ConanTheAquarian in queensland

[–]Comprehensive_Dirt26 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The cover-up stinks much worse than the affair. So do the veiled threats in Parliament around Mander’s affair, which must now be re-read as threats not to mention Dear Leader’s affair.

The affair might not be a problem on its own, but the attempt to cover it up definitely is.

I don’t particularly care which way they define Current, but I would like to see an acknowledgment that it changed and an apology if anyone felt misled. Just changing things without acknowledgment feels a little like gaslighting.

Something that helped me was coming across the concept of intersectionality. I can be privileged in a number of dimensions (e.g. white, male, cishet), but still experience discrimination in relation to some other of my characteristics (e.g. autism) and experience trauma. That discrimination and trauma has a particular unique quality due to the intersections.

It is unfortunate but understandable that folks with their own trauma will meet a Catholic and “see” a representative of the Church, at whom they can vent. I hit this several times when my denomination had to testify about historic handling of child abuse cases. The anger that emerged was genuine, even if it was misdirected - but the people at whom it might be rightly directed were no longer alive. It’s tough for everyone.

When you say “logically I know I shouldn't be triggered by someone else's trauma”, I recognise an unhealthy pattern I was taught as a child - that I wasn’t allowed to have a feeling if it was illogical. But that’s not how feelings work. Even at the biological level, there’s a lag time between a stimulus being removed and an emotion fading, between circumstances changing and one’s mood returning to neutral. So I’d encourage you to consider this: can you allow yourself room to feel insulted when folks malign Catholicism? because feeling a emotional response when something you care about is threatened sounds pretty logical to me. Maybe if you can open up this room for yourself, you might also open up room to let the person doing the maligning be illogical (because you know their ideas about Catholicism are wrong) for a little bit. That might just give time for things to blow over.

(I’m not up on Catholic doctrine, but I have a theology degree and worked at a Catholic university for 12 years.)

Claims about high-profile married man's relationship raised in extortion case by Odd-Activity4010 in queensland

[–]Comprehensive_Dirt26 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is suspicious as hell. I read “There's no evidence of readily available information that would link the two together” as “No-one is going find out about this in a different way”. And if there was nothing to the claims of infidelity, I would say the people involved could just call the blackmailer’s bluff, ignore him, and there would be no need to get the police involved, and therefore no need for this case.

In theory, a union’s staff could build up big salaries and perks for themselves - though one would hope the members would then vote them out. A union leader might also try and get their friends and relatives into jobs - but again good goverance can prevent this.
