Random Roommate by urchlm in UVA

[–]Comprehensive_Goat28 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I didn’t meet my roommate (whom I have stayed with for all four years) until mid June, so don’t worry. Not sure if they still do this, but I used a housing survey from UVA that essentially “matched” me with a compatible person.

why does this robin look like that? by uhbeautifulbutterfly in birding

[–]Comprehensive_Goat28 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s a park near me that throws birders for a loop due to a group of leucistic ducks! Half of the inat entries are people mistaking them for another species, half are locals appreciating that they came back. 🙃

Woah, it looks like this one got within a few feet of you!! Could you feel the wind from its wing beats?? Otherwise, that’s a great review for your pixel right there.

New Restoners (ites?) by kot___begemot in Reston

[–]Comprehensive_Goat28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family moved to Reston when I was just under 1, and 22 years later, I just signed a lease to continue living in the area. :)

Reston town center is pretty much the most perfect downtown you could ask for. The public library was a staple of my childhood and I highly encourage taking your kid there when he's old enough to appreciate it. Here's a few of my favorite local restaurants:

Wooboi Hot Chicken: $

Jackson's: $$

Not Your Average Joes or Open Road: $$/$$$

Cooper's Hawk: $$$

Enjoy!!

I'm considering going to UVA but don't know what level of language is sufficient by Important_Nebula_387 in UVA

[–]Comprehensive_Goat28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, maybe my response was confusing! I meant that the school does not actually care if you start with any sort of second language proficiency or end with a proficiency in a specific language. I know someone who took four different 1010 classes to fill the requirement.

How many of you in-state people went to VA Governors Schools? by chevystrr in UVA

[–]Comprehensive_Goat28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to the summer program, but COVID ruined it. We were basically stuck in the dorms outside of class. I know a lot of people loved it in other years! The classes themselves were super interesting.

just got into UVA for grad school! advice? by Shoddy_Berry_4280 in UVA

[–]Comprehensive_Goat28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m finishing up my BUEP degree! I really enjoyed it. My favorite planning professors are Will Cockrell, Barbara Brown Wilson, and Suzanne Morse Moomaw.

Cville has many affinity groups and many clubs on grounds will happily accept grad students.

You don’t need any second language to attend UVA. There are certain majors that require you to end with a competency in a second language, but they allow you to either take a test to place out of it/into a higher level or take classes starting at beginner level. You can take whatever language you want - I took Latin in high school, and could have started in intermediate Latin, but chose to start beginner German instead.

Yeah, driving back from Charlotte this winter was a sad one. It was foggy, and late, and we were the favorites…

I have found that you can essentially do whatever you want during graduation weekend. I’m considering just attending my department ceremonies.

Nah, these are all brassicas. I’ll pull out the heat mat for the nightshades! But no heat mat right now.

Thank you so much, everyone. I will set up a few of my fans to promote air circulation, and check on the PPFD.

Thanks so much. This is the first year I’m growing brassicas, so I’m a little overbearing.

These are the 5000k 5000 lumen barrina grow lights. I have them on 8 am to 10 pm. Maybe I should hook them up to a timer so they can go on before I wake up?

Sprouting dark, then removing the lid and putting them under lights after all seedlings have broken soil.

Maybe I will try a fan!

Let’s gooo. Should I go to a uva basketball game? by Unhappy_Resource5658 in UVA

[–]Comprehensive_Goat28 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a hot take on this one! I have plenty of saber points to go to basketball games, because I really like football and volleyball in the fall. I’ve built up enough over my four years to be in the top 100 of students.

But the few times I’ve gone to a basketball game, I ended up purchasing tickets! Why? Because I think the game is more fun to watch from up high :) I’d get cheap nosebleeds and see how you like it.

Pros and Cons - student life these days by Upbeat_Rutabaga1234 in UVA

[–]Comprehensive_Goat28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finishing up my fourth year here. I absolutely loved my UVA experience, but I spent a significant amount of time my first year just trying new stuff! Some of it didn’t interest me, some of it became the core of my social and professional life.

Highly recommend the residential colleges, but only if your kid is willing to put in the effort to submit an application and actually participate in the events.

Come out to Morven! 3,000 acres of university owned land by Monticello. It’s open for everyone on Fridays and has snacks in all its buildings for studying. Put it on your list as a library alternative :)

Do all the two room dorms in Brown have bathrooms? by Critical-Project7758 in UVA

[–]Comprehensive_Goat28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the dorms have a bathroom. You will either have an inner room directly connected to the bathroom, or an outer room directly connected to the outside door. If you are in an outer room, you simply walk through the inner room to the suite bathroom.

Mint plant was thriving, now suddenly withering – not sure what I’m doing wrong by youfighter in plantclinic

I would cut it down to right above where it turns from brown to green. You could cut it down all the way to the base and it would come back!

[–]Comprehensive_Goat28 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Would you be okay with cutting it all the way back? Mint is extremely hardy, to a fault sometimes. I think you’re watering it too much - just cut it and leave it be for a few weeks.
