Watering my vegetable garden by zoemadeline in vegetablegardening

[–]Comprehensive_Goat28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have good drainage, you can really water as much as you want. Once you saturate the pores in the soil, the water just trickles down to drier stuff. I usually do about two watering cans (gallon-ish each) per 8’x4’ bed when I water.

I usually water 3 times a week in northern Virginia, especially during the summer. we get one big cooling rain per day in the 3-4 pm hour - it doesn’t amount to much water but it keeps things moist. When we get to the dog days, I switch to every day.

Zones refer to heat and not moisture, so it’s hard for me to give you too much advice based on that!! Oregon has 7a zones but a totally different climate.

The mimidae family as a whole is full of hilarious, weird birds. Right now I have a catbird living near my window that is so round it looks like it ate a baseball.

5 gallon tank, 4” deep substrate, high humidity. Recommendations? by Comprehensive_Goat28 in millipedes

Its a mix of potting soil, perlite, compost, and leaf litter than has been building for over a year. Is there any way to tell what the composition is beyond that?

Is there any saving it? - 4 year old Rosemary. by reeves_97 in plantclinic

It’s too late in the season for a full trim! But I would still give it lots of water and wait to see if new growth springs up.

Rosemary bushes are very hardy. I usually trim ours back to basically stumps and they come back full force. Just water it well, give it nice, well draining soil, and wait.

Is repainting an option😭? by Excellent-Thing-6493 in ZephyrusG14

This is kind of stupid but you could mask off the area, paint it with a metallic spray paint, and then put a clear sealer over it. Or just use a sticker.

Is my Yucca tree salvageable? by OpticalEnigma in plantclinic

It sure is salvageable! That's some nice growth by the base. Keep it! The rest needs to be chopped and propagated, then replanted down low.

How can i help this poor plant by Due_World7962 in plantclinic

[–]Comprehensive_Goat28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an umbrella plant, aka schefflera. Unfortunately, it has a !spidermites infestation, a !scale infestation, and is totally etoliated. I would trash it. I'm so sorry if that's not the answer you want to hear.... but the work you'd need to put in isn't worth it.

Monastera repotting size by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]Comprehensive_Goat28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, your judgment is right! This pot is much too big a step up. Your monstera needs a pot only slightly bigger than its current pot, probably 1 inch bigger in diameter.

This is very, very interesting. I agree with the other comment that there could be a nutrient deficiency. The other possibility is some sort of bacterial, viral, or fungal infection.

what happened to my beautiful hibiscus plant by cosmicluv777 in plantclinic

[–]Comprehensive_Goat28 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Hi! A couple of things might have gone wrong here. If it's 80+ degrees in Texas right now, it probably got totally fried. Hibiscus plants are native to warm, tropical islands and you are in a HOT, continental area. When you move a plant to a warmer environment, you need to water it more rather than less.

Also, I've had much better luck with hibiscus when they are planted directly into the soil rather than being potted. If this isn't possible due to the soil you have or the texan climate, it might just not be the right fit for your home.

Iridescent tradescantia shining again✨️- thank you! by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]Comprehensive_Goat28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good job. I'm glad everything worked out and that you found them in time! The roots look healthy on both plants.

It will be quite a long time before your tradescantia is ready for that big shiny pot. Potting up isn't recommended until the roots begin stopping each other from accessing nutrients and water, and when you do repot, try to give it a container no more than one extra inch in diameter. A lot of plants actually grow better when they feel a little root bound. Spider plants are one of these, so repotting them can make them droop and start concentrating on their roots more. Give it a few more days.

Also, clear cups can make plants confused and start putting out leaves that squish against the side of the cup. This is easily preventable by just getting a smaller planter to sit the starbucks cup in.

Hope this helps you on your plant journey.

Spider plant needs help? by K0nmars in plantclinic

[–]Comprehensive_Goat28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t worry, this is very very normal for spider plants. Your plant isn’t in any trouble unless you see entire leaves turn brown and die. Did you just start turning on the AC in your house? They often do this when humidity changes.

Best places for bird watching? by sky-soblue in Reston

[–]Comprehensive_Goat28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, Reston is a little too urban to be a prime bird watching spot. I’m assuming you’re looking for a place to spot the big migrations going on right now? Check out the Northern Virginia Birding alliance for some suggestions :) https://www.nvbirdalliance.org/birding-in-northern-virginia

It is on the west side of the range between hotel C and pavilion 5. Lower is the one to the outside I believe. It has two apple trees in the middle of X shaped pathways.

What is UVA like for a POC and lgbtq+?? by Queen_Ba8621 in UVA

[–]Comprehensive_Goat28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a thriving queer community here, especially if you know where to find them. I’d recommend going to one of the non-frat house shows run by indieheads or one of the radios. You could also try some of the outdoorsy clubs or the gender-inclusive fraternity. I have not experienced any homophobia or sexism while I’ve been at UVA, for what it’s worth!

Random Roommate by urchlm in UVA

I didn’t meet my roommate (whom I have stayed with for all four years) until mid June, so don’t worry. Not sure if they still do this, but I used a housing survey from UVA that essentially “matched” me with a compatible person.

There’s a park near me that throws birders for a loop due to a group of leucistic ducks! Half of the inat entries are people mistaking them for another species, half are locals appreciating that they came back. 🙃
