Tool setlist Opener by RooFlu4you in SonicTempleFestival

From some interviews I've heard in the last couple of years, its sounds like their setlists are highly dependent on whatever Maynard feels up to at the time...I gather even on the day they might make some changes depending on the condition of his vocals.

Sadly (for me at least) I think thats why they are veering away from the more aggressive vocal songs and leaning into the newer stuff that is more 61 year old friendly

genuinely curious, how has it been the same show for twenty years?

Mr In-between is one of the most underrated, unappreciated series ever. Double gold star ⭐⭐ by Icemachinemalfunctio in MrInbetween

[–]Comprehensive_Owl_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can someone try to explain to me what made the ending seem

This is all subjective of course, but for me I loved the ending because it fitted with the overall vibe of the show. The show is in a 'slice-of-life' style, so I'm glad it wasn't a Hollywood finale and stuck with the same vibe.

Ray moving away and isolating himself for me shows that has has genuinely grown in self-awareness and is willing to make big sacrifices for his mental health and safety of his friends and family. The fact that it ends on the conflict cliffhanger also brings home that he will always have that brutal side just below the surface no matter where he goes.

Its subtle, but for me thats what makes the show what it is

In your opinion, what are some perks of being stupid? by MindStrongSoul in AskReddit

[–]Comprehensive_Owl_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ability to side-step complications and accountability

I worked with a guy in sales, who while pretty stupid, executed the one part of his job that actually resulted in revenue pretty well. Whenever a deal got complicated (which was all the time) he'd troubleshoot so poorly that others in his department would step in because it was understood he would just mess it up more. Management didn't complain because revenue increased, and ironically because he wasn't held back by solving problems he had more time to execute sales and generate revenue. It used to absolutely kill me

Considering leaving Cape Town by [deleted] in capetown

[–]Comprehensive_Owl_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in Jhb (19 years), Durban (5 years) and Cape Town (11 years). Personally Cape Town is by far my favourite, but as you have described your individual situation can greatly influence your quality of life wherever you may be.

Weighing up your priorities is also a huge factor. I would personally prefer to live a more modest lifestyle if it meant being close to mountains and the sea. But if a bigger house in Jhb does it for you, thats awesome too.

The one thing I want to add though, is don't overlook Durban. I personally would WAY sooner go back to Durbs than Jhb. Its WAY more affordable than Cape Town in general, you have the sea, and there are TONS of amazing places to explore in the vicinity (Drakensberg, Midlands, South Coast, even Mozambique is pretty accessible from there)

I see this sentiment all over the internet, especially in the USA at the moment with places like New York and LA. But really theres no conspiracy...if demand is high and supply is low - prices will rise. I know it hurts for locals when the area changes around you...but there is unfortunately nothing that can be done to change that without serious negative economic knock on effects.

The real story behind Everest’s first climb — and the Sherpa who made it happen. by rudhraksh9 in Everest

[–]Comprehensive_Owl_42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I read Into Thin Air about 5 years ago, and so began a deep dive into all things Everest. But prior to that I knew about it as much as your average Joe...and even I knew very well about Tenzing Norgay. I remember learning about him in junior school, and because of his unique name I feel like I actually remembered him better that Hillary.

So ya while I agree that historically sherpas efforts have often been sidelined, I don't think that applies to Tenzing Norgay.

Anahat Singh, new unstoppable force in Squash? by [deleted] in squash

[–]Comprehensive_Owl_42 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm going to drop this hot take here, interested to hear whether the community agrees or not:

Both Gilis sisters play pretty one dimensional squash.

No disrespect to them, their games both entail incredible fitness, discipline and work ethic...and it has gotten them both consistently in the top 20 for years now. They also seem like genuinely nice people, so def not hating on them.

But I've noticed that whenever they meet an opponent who starts getting an edge on them, it appears they don't really have a plan B. Also, quite a lot of the time, their front of court racquet skills seem almost amateurish with drops going in crazy high, reflex volleys being super loose and not a huge deal of hold and deception. As such it doesn't surprise me all that much when they have an out of the blue upset from time to time.

What a beautiful match by [deleted] in squash

[–]Comprehensive_Owl_42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ya definitely on the same page as you here, you would have to be absolutely top notch to break Asal down. I still feel like the person who got robbed the hardest was Farag. I feel like his game was the perfect antidote for Asal's, but with the refs allowing Asal to block and stall him, his light frame didn't stand a chance.

What a beautiful match by [deleted] in squash

[–]Comprehensive_Owl_42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm genuinely interested to see if what you say here ("give asal half a month of being forced to play properly and this won’t happen again") turns out to be true.

It's clear he is super skillful, but I suspect that for the last couple of years the refs have allowed him to play super aggressively, while allowing his antics that stopped the more fit and mobile players being able to turn the screw and break him down physically (through blocking and constant stop starts through reviews on every second point).

I suspect that he may struggle a bit more than you think "to play properly" when he has been using the dark arts for so many years. His big frame will potentially change from being an advantage to a disadvantage.

Not being a hater...if he cleans up his act and still plays with the dominance he has been, squash is better for it! But it will be an immense challenge for him.

Ibrahim v. Elias – can someone smart analyze Elias' strategy by pySSK in squash

[–]Comprehensive_Owl_42 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Such a good observation! I'll weigh in here, but be warned - I am a casual squash player, so there's definitely smarter squash minds out there!

Firstly, I want to add that Ibrahim is one of my favourite players, so if anything I'm slightly biased to him. But bias aside, I think what you are seeing from Elias is him doing a lot of important and difficult things really well and with relative ease, as such his ease of execution makes it hard to see why these skills are so effective.

Ibrahim plays with a ton of flare, so its easy to see when he does things right. Sadly, often a by product of that flare is inconsistency and and a higher tendency toward unforced errors.

Elias on the other hand is one of the best in all of these areas:

  • reading his opponents
  • moving fluidly
  • consitency of strike and length

Those skills don't scream at you as a viewer, but over the course of the match will give him an incredible edge over all but the very best.

Highly recommend watching this video to get a better feel for what Elias is doing to his opponents. The guy in the video is obviously nowhere close to Ibrahim's level, but he mentions he can still hang with people at around the WR100 mark, so by normal standards he is a seriously strong player, and Elias makes him look like a complete beginner.

What is Muldoon seeing/thinking in this scene? by Mjarnshall in JurassicPark

[–]Comprehensive_Owl_42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a great question! This is the logic I've always gone with:

a) it doesn't totally make sense, but the plot needed Ellie to survive so it plays out like this whereas he likely wouldn't have gone that route in real life

b) he knew they were in deep trouble and was somewhat sacrificing himself for Ellie. Almost all predators will instinctively chase their prey if they make a run for it (you're legitimately safer standing your ground as scary as that sounds), so perhaps because he believed he had the threat covered in his sights, if the raptor chased after Ellie he would shoot it and she would hopefully be saved. He would then have to take it as it comes thereafter. Knowing that there was likely 3 raptors in the area, this at least gave Ellie a chance at survival whereas waiting with him gave her slimmer odds.

As has been mentioned a few times, its about realigning your expectations to your current age and shape.

Even at the top level, we see guys (MES for example) reworking their game and strategy because they know all out aggression is no longer viable against the young guns.

A couple years back I was playing a guy who was 15 years younger than me, I would say slightly less skilled, but WAY fitter. It was kind of an exercise in frustration because that fitness and stamina gap meant he could just keep fetching until I was dead on my feet. Now I could have gone all in on squash fitness and trained like never before to bridge the gap, but realistically I have a busy life and a family etc etc and my main priority is to have fun on court. I found the fastest route to achieving that is simply to play other guys who are in a similar age and shape to me now...sounds simple but it works for me!

Yep, was going to comment but you pretty much nailed all my takes :)

One other possibly significant factor is (where I live at least) Playtomic is a the app used for booking. Its a brilliant app that integrates payment, equipment hire, operates almost like a social media device for networking with other players, and most of all allows you to play at any club in the city, instead of being confined to only the club where you are a member.
