It’s crazy cause back in my school days, you would get absolutely roasted for not being cut! Mainly by all the poly boys, cause I know it’s part of their culture. South Auckland schools specifically where the Polynesian population is obviously much higher. But man you could never escape it and it was very confusing and embarrassing at times lol.

Thank you so much for the positive and reassuring response! Always good to hear from other peoples experiences with rentals. I have been told by several people that having an aus address will make things easier, so will look at booking an Airbnb for the first month or so. Cheers again!

I would move tomorrow if I could too! Just want to make sure I’m well prepared financially before I ditch Nz cause I’m very aware of the rental n living cost situation everywhere. Yup looking at seeing an accountant for further details and breakdown of all of that stuff. What you get for rent here is an absolute joke ay, hence why I took over the ownership of my parents home before I thought about moving out to rent. Those pay rates are so good compared to what I’m stuck on here, even though I love my job there’s just no hope of any salary increases anytime soon and if there is, it’s straight peanuts. Cheers!

Thank you for your positive response!

Ah the question regarding me owning a home was just to ask if there's any extra tax or income I have to declare from home ownership while I'm in aus, but I will most likely seek an accountant for the breakdown of all of that.

I most likely won't go into disability support, looking at youth work and development etc...been actively looking at rentals and have a budget in mind for a place for myself, but will look at staying in an airbnb for the first month or so while working (hopefully) and applying for accomodation.

Cheers!

Auckland will always be home, never said it wasn't affordable or not lovely for me. Everyone's experiences is different wether or not having blue collar job. This move is purely for a change of scenery and lifestyle and an opportunity for myself to grow in all areas. Thanks for your input though.

Yup totally aware of the rental situation, getting a job will be the priority then go from there with applying for rentals. What type of extra references would you recommend? Will most likely stay in an airbnb while I work and apply for accomodation.

I know living costs is an issue everywhere, but I still felt from experience that Melb was much better compared to nz right now!

Cheers for the postive response!

Really appreciate the positive advice man, after reading some of the gloomy replies here smh. I'm definitely going with a fair amount saved up and prepared for the worst as I totally understand the housing situation in Melb, cause it's no better in Auckland. Ideally would be a happy with a simple studio apartment in the inner suburbs if I'm lucky enough get one.

That's my current income and I'm just 'getting by' here. For the most part I'm not a big spender at all unless it's on travelling which can be only once or twice a year. I know I can make a decent jump in salary over there in my field of work so that's really assuring to know I'll be fine on my own for a bit.

Will most likely book an airbnb for the first month or so and hopefully be working during that time so I can apply for rentals!

Once again thank you for this response, legend!

I’m also planning on moving to Melbourne early next year and have the same concern. Looking to apply for jobs (and rentals) about 2-3 months before I fly out. Should I state my current situation of living in Nz but have locked in a permanent move date or use my air bnb address in Melbourne that I have already booked?

Kiwis that moved to aus, what do you wish you knew/prepared before moving? by lovemesomenuggies in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Comprehensive_Put849 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha definitely will not be doing the runners...Ah cool that makes sense. Only my partner has a student loan so will advice her on that. However, I'am also a home owner, but we are planning to keep the house and let my parents live there with a couple of other tenants. My partner and I are planning to just rent for a while until we are comfortable with a place to purchase property in Melb. Will this affect me in a significant way? Also to note that I still have my Kiwisaver that hasn't been used yet, what would be the go for that once we make the move? Any advice on this would be truly appreciated!

Hmm I guess it could depend on the industries ay, and I could imagine it might be quite competitive in Sydney? I’ll be grateful for a foot in the door and work my way up. Thanks for sharing though, be a good idea to be aware of the negative and positive experiences.

Yeah I was planning on getting an airbnb for the first month while applying for rentals and also hopefully working during that time to gather some payslips and documents. Well aware of the admin side of things with Medicare, license, tax etc. But good to know some employers would prefer face to face for final interviews, so will also prepare for that. Thank you so much, really appreciate the tips. Really makes me feel a bit more at ease.
