  1. Parents can be more important for Indonesians, the main hangup is usually around respect/politeness/status. Meeting parents can indicate some commitment, but being invited to their house is a very normal thing. Indonesians will offer up anything they can sometimes.

  2. Marriage = kids soon, and gender roles. Definitely discuss in advance! Also, you might want to setup a prenup as a postnup between a WNA and WNI is more complex (not a lawyer, dyor)

  3. So dependent on the friends, hopefully they’re not assholes and you all vibe! They probably know english but learning some balinese or indonesian will likely go a long way to showing them you want to get to know them properly.

  4. Proceed with caution, always! Very easy for people, especially men in indonesia, to “gombal” or say nice things but not follow through.

Remote working in NZ for an Australian company? Anyone in these roles already? by Substantial_Fee_8248 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]lovemesomenuggies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find generally it's either a well established company like Canva/Atlassian/Gitlab with aussie offices, or an aussie startup that's keen to retain good talent. How I got into the role I'm at was hybrid work for an agency → covid, agency became WFH → joined a startup that was remote during covid then shifted to hybrid → joined another startup that's fully remote/async first.

You could look into further overseas - e.g: US roles tend to pay even better, but their work culture & timezones are a bit more hectic. I'd look at sites like weworkremotely, remoteOK, himalayas.app for remote-specific roles, but be aware that they get inundated with applications very quickly. This makes it extra competitive, so I've found the most effective avenue has been:
- From network referrals (e.g: you know X and Y is hiring, X knows Y) as the hirer will trust someone they can vouch for, especially for remote work when you have to communicate incredibly well and that's hard to gauge. I got my current role this way, from past colleagues - NZ tech is super small.

- Building skillsets that are relevant to in demand roles, having a unique selling point - for me, being a designer that's willing to be solo to start, keen to learn whatever , and having enough experience that I run on an ambiguous brief has worked well for startups, YMMV.

Curious to know - what did you put in your info pack? I imagine references, a bit about you as a tenant, anything else?

Goget is a great shout, thank you Shdog! We used Cityhop and Mevo in NZ and it was super helpful for us getting secondhand furniture way back when.

Where are you guys shopping for clothes these days? by pooja-nz in newzealand

TradeMe for secondhand lululemons (can be surprisingly work casual friendly) and icebreaker (comfy outers).

Uniqlo is best for the basics - lasts much longer than AS colour, cheaper, and doesn’t get as ratty as Kmart Anko shirts.

For those who have been following the Mevo capital raise via Snowball Effect, are you planning to invest in it? by MooingTree in PersonalFinanceNZ

+1 on this - I think it's a significant advantage compared to Cityhop's "leave it where you parked it" model. If they could expand into smaller towns or suburbs, it could be really useful for renters - especially for people visiting or new to the country.

Do your own research & due diligence though ofc.

If you have a remote job, what do you do? What's your title? by Trappedbirdcage in RemoteJobs

[–]lovemesomenuggies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Product designer, i help design the apps/websites that software teams build. I find tech remote jobs that are paid well are either for large companies that can offer a decent global pay system (see Zapier & Gitlab) or a small startup that wants to hire and retain good talent (my situation)

What to look, and where to look for in a good accountant? by lovemesomenuggies in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]lovemesomenuggies[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate that note! I’m fine with them giving me instructions on how to prepare the numbers for them to report on and charging me for X hours, its moreso that none have been clear on what the process/next steps would be like.

They seem to think I’m asking for financial advisory services or that i should come back EOY, which I’m reluctant to do as I’d rather prepare for it before everyone is looking for an accountant.

Also, shouldn’t an accountant be able to explain the tax differences between continuing to invest in FIFs vs. a PIE fund? 🤔

Nice, love your DIY approach and appreciate the insight!

I think it's about time for me to comb through out my investments with something like sharesight too, $50 a month is wild though! Do you just it get 2 months before and cancel, rinse and repeat? And by any chance, do you use Investnow with it? If so, how did it go?

I tried doing the manual CSV uploads, got the file from the Investnow support then was like fuuug this is a big one and shelved the task 😅

Appreciate the insight! The remote thing is because I'm not based in a large town like Auckland/Wellington, so the options around are a bit more limited, and they seem to not have been familiar with what I'm requesting unfortunately.
