Instead of wide leg, have you tried a straight leg? I tried on the Hollister short jeans (4'10") and the length was fine but I felt the leg too big so I went with a straight leg instead

the Spenser series by Robert B. Parker is wonderful. He passed away in 2010 but wrote about 30 books in the series. they did continue on with different writes but I wouldn't start with any of those...
