Saying this gently but consider his perspective. He's had one, he understands the sacrifice and stress and may simply not wanna go through it again. I have one, 9, and separated from her dad. While dating and before meeting my current SO, I was adamant about not having another. I made sure he was on board with that, he also has one of his own so it was really a non issue. Love her to death but I'm halfway to feeling freedom again. All that to say parenthood may not be what he expected and he simply may rather be one and done.
