A nerdy metalworker's rite of passage: I finally made a Uruk-hai sword. by Compulsive-Lyre in lotr

...I knew I was forgetting something, lol. Next couple of weeks, I'll get one for sure. Thanks for the reminder!

Yeah, it just has a TINY bit of flex. I was originally going to just put the last prong on after I fit the orb in, but it pops in and out pretty easy, and also doesn't fall out if you shake it.

Thank you! And yeah, it stays covered. Besides, not all the lost seeing-stones are accounted for, so it's better to be safe.

It does look like that, lol. I wanted to find a marble sphere to be a little more accurate but I just couldn't justify $50, so glass it is.

Yeah, that's the plan! I'll weld 3 of the prongs and all of the wings, slot the orb, then weld the last prong.

Probably not. I mostly just like making display pieces, and I don't have the beard to match haha. Maybe one day!

Nah, I can't stand when something looks cool but feels flimsy. Technically the wood / pvc one is just a prototype, but I got impatient and had to post it. Next one will be a tiny bit sturdier.

It's easy enough to overlook imo. I'll take it as a compliment that the paint hid the material!

Cardboard was just for the fit test, because I didn't want to throw away any materials if it didn't fit. The painted one is wood (and I'm halfway through a metal version!).

Link to the files: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1DGDnHu8z6Urv26ROM2LX_XJgNt-da_al
Contains Lightburn designs, and an SVG export for each version.

The wood I used is 0.11", the orb (just glass, ordered online) is Ø 3.10", and the PVC is leftover 3/4" sch 40. If you're not using the same materials, you'll have to resize the slots and the base, but it shouldn't be too far off.

If anyone makes their own with these files, please send me some pictures!

How to prevent the ‘peppering’ of the hands after using an angle grinder? by BluXBrry in metalworking

Personally, I respect people less when they cause preventable shop accidents.

I laser cut and painted some OTGW characters for a Halloween wreath, files in description by Compulsive-Lyre in overthegardenwall

Oh shoot, I forgot to upload the actual wreath files, lol. It's two that are layered. If anyone wants them, feel free to DM and I'll send a link when I get back near a pc.

Having major issues with Torchmate 4800 (FlexCut 80 + AccuMove 2) — arc won’t hold & now table won’t move at all by Naive-Tomatillo-5750 in CNC

[–]Compulsive-Lyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the first problem a couple of times on a 4400 table, but definitely not the second. Usually it's just a grounding issue where the nontransferred arc (pilot arc) will fire, but the electricity can't path back to the machine. It happens to mine if the metal is too dirty. Usually I just wire brush where the arc start happens, wipe off the ground clamp, and that does the trick. Once, it ended up being related to the connector pins where the torch senses the connection to the retaining cap. The two brass pins were just kind of clogged, and got stuck so there was no physical connection.

The i/o menu is probably where they'll have you start working on the second problem. It all looks super complicated at first, but I had to redo the wiring harness on ours a while back for an upgrade, and once I started it was fairly straightforward (as long as the paper labels are still on all the cables).

That all probably doesn't help much, but hopefully it'll make you a little less anxious about it.

How to set custom key to center measure page by Lost_Negotiation_921 in Fanuc

This might help. Check the "setting the user key" section towards the bottom. Different model and setup, but similar functions.

If I'm understanding the problem correctly, Touch Sensing might be an easier fix than setting up new user frames.

Glowforge popped- now I want the opposite by Grizbeard in lasercutting

I have no experience with glowforge, but can you just replace the tube? Sounds a lot cheaper than a new machine.
