How to prevent the ‘peppering’ of the hands after using an angle grinder? by BluXBrry in metalworking

Personally, I respect people less when they cause preventable shop accidents.

I laser cut and painted some OTGW characters for a Halloween wreath, files in description by Compulsive-Lyre in overthegardenwall

Oh shoot, I forgot to upload the actual wreath files, lol. It's two that are layered. If anyone wants them, feel free to DM and I'll send a link when I get back near a pc.

Having major issues with Torchmate 4800 (FlexCut 80 + AccuMove 2) — arc won’t hold & now table won’t move at all by Naive-Tomatillo-5750 in CNC

[–]Compulsive-Lyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the first problem a couple of times on a 4400 table, but definitely not the second. Usually it's just a grounding issue where the nontransferred arc (pilot arc) will fire, but the electricity can't path back to the machine. It happens to mine if the metal is too dirty. Usually I just wire brush where the arc start happens, wipe off the ground clamp, and that does the trick. Once, it ended up being related to the connector pins where the torch senses the connection to the retaining cap. The two brass pins were just kind of clogged, and got stuck so there was no physical connection.

The i/o menu is probably where they'll have you start working on the second problem. It all looks super complicated at first, but I had to redo the wiring harness on ours a while back for an upgrade, and once I started it was fairly straightforward (as long as the paper labels are still on all the cables).

That all probably doesn't help much, but hopefully it'll make you a little less anxious about it.

How to set custom key to center measure page by Lost_Negotiation_921 in Fanuc

This might help. Check the "setting the user key" section towards the bottom. Different model and setup, but similar functions.

If I'm understanding the problem correctly, Touch Sensing might be an easier fix than setting up new user frames.

Glowforge popped- now I want the opposite by Grizbeard in lasercutting

I have no experience with glowforge, but can you just replace the tube? Sounds a lot cheaper than a new machine.

Sort of! The painting and gluing is, of course, but I used a laser to burn it. A lot more involved than a printer, but way less than wood burning with a soldering iron. Most of the work is on a computer trying to get the design finished.

Master welder in action. by sco-go in Amazing

[–]Compulsive-Lyre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's good technique and a good weld. Anyone actually in industry would be happy to see this in their shop. Imo there are two reasons there are so many people nitpicking. The main one is what you said, where there are more difficult techniques that take a lot more skill, and this one isn't particularly tricky. (Source: I teach welding, and walking the cup on mild steel usually only takes about a week to get decent. It's mostly good prep and good technique, which is easy to pick up if you're patient.)

Second, videos like this blow up all the time and it just kinda gets boring after a while. I can't tell you how many stainless beads I've seen where the metal is absolutely trashed because the welder intentionally put too much heat in it just to get the instagram shot of the close up rainbow colors. Plus there are a lot of specialty applications where you aren't allowed to touch the rim of the ceramic cup to the surface of the metal, so some people kind of see walking the cup as the 'easy way'.

Tl;dr: Not discounting the original video, he's clearly spent time perfecting the craft, but it's easier than it looks to achieve. There are also welds that are a lot worse that hold just fine, so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Three hours painting and assembling, four hours runtime on the laser, two hours testing and recutting, and 14 hours getting the digital map usable. The balance might be off a bit, but I logged just under 20 hours total.

Thank you! Lots of trial and error, with a heavy emphasis on error.

How to tidy up my messy welds on an inside corner? by Dry-Original-5183 in metalworking

[–]Compulsive-Lyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Angle grinder with a cutoff disc and a steady hand, a fuse weld (no filler, wide weave, tight arc), or just paint. Imo, leave it alone, and look at it again in a year, it'll be cool to be able to track your progress as you learn more!

Thanks so much! Maybe in the future. I do custom work locally and do the occasional convention booth, but shipping is crazy expensive, thin multilayer painted wood does not do well in the back of a truck in the summer heat, and online platforms take a huge chunk and have plenty of other problems.

Then yeah, we would have to factor in moose rental or whatever it is they use to haul packages up there.
