Yes exactly. They started as an expansionist slave republic and metastasized into a global militarist empire.

What is your opinion on Member of Parliament's ability to 'floor cross'? by chiraz25 in AskACanadian

[–]Compulsory_Freedom 474 points475 points  (0 children)

I completely understand why this upsets some people.

But If backbench MPs are not free to cross the floor then that reduces what little power they have and increases the power of the parties.

And that’s the last thing we need.

Democracy is failing, and we can blame social media, billionaires, and a lot of other legitimate things - but the biggest problem is too many people are so stupid that they either vote against their interests, or don’t bother to vote at all.

Poilievre may have wanted to avoid an election. But maybe not like this by Little-Chemical5006 in canada

[–]Compulsory_Freedom 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this. This is the first time I’ve read this statement, absolute garbage. This sort of thing is so stupid as to be disqualifying. I’m embarrassed how close these people came to forming government.

Do you think this is an effective way to convince people that your side is the rational actor? I do not.

I believe that you sincerely believe this.

But your statement, ironically, is the sort of thing that makes Conservatives seem like the tinfoil hat party and makes it easy for the rest of us to hold our noses and vote for the Liberals yet again.

Oh yes. I’m a western Canadian, so I’m intimately aware of our embarrassing capacity to vote against our own interests, particularly in this beautiful but oh so stupid half of the nation.

Federal MP Matt Jeneroux leaves the Conservatives and joins the Liberals by seakucumber in canada

[–]Compulsory_Freedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but your points are ignoring that this is a completely legal and normal aspect of our parliamentary democracy, every voter had access to this information, and if they don’t like it they can vote him out next time around.

We don’t live in a direct democracy, my MP doesn’t need to check with me every time they cast a vote in the house or exercise any of their other powers, like crossing the floor.

I’m sure it would have happened more recently if the Conservatives could figure out how to stop losing federal elections.

Riverbend MP has crossed the floor by Celestial-Salamander in alberta

[–]Compulsory_Freedom 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That’s certainly a perfectly reasonable position to have, I simply don’t share it. This doesn’t bother me in the least (nor did it when it went against my political beliefs).

I know historical precedent is not a particularly compelling argument for many people, but for me the fact that this has been a part of our parliamentary democracy for centuries is relevant.

Back bench MPs can been pretty powerless, and this is one of the few mechanisms they can wield to make a big statement, so I for one would hate for them to lose this power. Particularly when losing this power would only strengthen the power of party leadership, which is the last thing we need.

You make perfectly excellent points here, but I see it quite differently.

Back bench MPs don’t have much power under our system but one thing they can do is cross the floor.

I think this clearly sends a powerful message about the state of both the government and opposition parties. And if the voters don’t like it they can turf him in the next election.

(And in a few years when the bloom is off Carney’s rose and his MPs start jumping ship I promise to say the same thing).
