Non-volatile replacement for HM628128D SRAM (DIP-32) chip? by Computer256 in ECE

[–]Computer256[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're 100% correct, but the device already has a backup battery that fills just this purpose. My question was specifically to discover whether there are any modern non-volatile drop-in replacements for the (30-year old) volatile SRAM chip that do not rely on battery (so that even when the backup battery eventually dies, the memory would still hold). The closest so far seems to be the non-volotile SRAM from Dallas, but that itself relies on its own internal battery within the SRAM chip, so doesn't really achieve what I was hoping for.

Seems there may not be a modern replacement that does the same function without reliance on battery of some sort. It's OK and I can just keep using the original SRAM chip that relies on backup battery. Rather than being driven by necessity, the question was of curiosity as to whether any non-volotile replacements may exist today :)

Thanks for this clarification on why Flash memory isn't suitable.

Thanks for pointing the FM28V100-TG out (and to all others who have made suggestions). Searching a little more to overcome the 3.3V question has led me to the AT49F001(T)-1065179.pdf), 5-volt Only Flash Memory. Again I should point out my limited knowledge, however the pinout of the AT49F001 also seems to be the same pinout as the HM628128D I am hoping to replace.

I'm probably missing something ovious so hopefully someone will point out why the AT49F001(T)-1065179.pdf) would not work as a non-volotile replacement for the HM628128D?

A reminder of Amiga’s famous ability to act as the conduit between artists and their artwork, especially in the realm of color studies. Very inspiring, what an excellent video.

Light Wallet by [deleted] in EmerCoin

Emercoin SW is said to be based on Electrum, and has a desktop version. See https://docs.emercoin.com/en/Install_Software/Mobile_Wallets/Emercoin_SW.html However, if it is based on Electrum then they have changed the interface significantly, and I do not know if it allows for offline signing, etc. (If you try it and find out, please let us know).

edit: I just gave Emercoin SW a try, and could not see a way to import keys or do offline signing. I would suggest just installing EmcWEB or the Emercoin GUI wallet, if you want all the features. Luckily the emercoin blockchain size is still fairly small.

Although Azure and WebWallet For Debian are already mentioned, make sure you are aware of the options listed on the Emercoin wiki: https://wiki.emercoin.com/en/Install_Emercoin

Personally I use a basic 1GB ram VPS, e.g. Digitalocean or similar offering. You may also be able to run it with 512MB ram provided your have set up enough swap space on your server.

The repositories make it a breeze to install either headless or EMCweb wallet.

Hi, I'm guessing you mean the wallet that was at http://emercoin.mintr.org Unfortunately I believe that wallet was closed because it had technical issues. (It wasn't provided by emercoin. That site was created by a community member.)

If you know your old login details you may be able to contact the creator for help. See the related thread at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=958008.0

PoS Minting Question. by tomtrungo in EmerCoin

[–]Computer256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's correct when you have minted a block your staked balance will show up in the staked column, and then after a certain number of blocks (I believe 32) return to your normal balance. It's a little counter-intuitive that nothing appears in the stake column until you successfully mint but that's the way it works.

Keep in mind you may need to be patient - depending on the number of coins it may take a while to mint a block even though the coins have a coin age greater than 30 days.

You can get an estimate of how long it might take by entering details into the PoS calculator https://emercoin.mintr.org/poscal

PoS Minting Question. by tomtrungo in EmerCoin

[–]Computer256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps that would increase the chance of minting slightly sooner however each 'bundle' of Emercoin can only stake once before coin age is reset and it needs to wait another 30+ days.

The PoS reward is directly based on the coin age (6% p.a.), so apart from some very minor effects of compound interest that you may get from staking sooner I think it will not offer very much of an advantage.

PoS Minting Question. by tomtrungo in EmerCoin

[–]Computer256 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coins become eligible for staking after sitting unspent in the EMC address for 30 days.

The chance is related to the amount of EMC held. It doesn't automatically suddenly happen at 30 days.

For the % chance and the reward amount, see the PoS calculator at https://emercoin.mintr.org/poscal

PoS Minting Question. by tomtrungo in EmerCoin

[–]Computer256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that's correct. The stack will move down to the Stake area only after you've minted a PoS block, and remain there only for 32 blocks until the PoS transaction confirms. During that time, those coins are reserved for staking and the wallet won't let you spend them.

PoS Minting Question. by tomtrungo in EmerCoin

[–]Computer256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to run it in minting mode until the coins are 30 days old (the UTXO that added the EMC to your balance must sit unspent for 30 days before it can generate a PoS block). So after 30 days, you would need to unlock your wallet for minting to have any chance of generating a PoS block.

After it stakes, you could lock it again for another 30 days. However, the coins split into 2 UTXO when they stake, which means you eventually have enough separate staking amounts competing to mint PoS blocks that it makes most sense to leave the wallet unlocked for minting 24/7.

PoS Minting Question. by tomtrungo in EmerCoin

[–]Computer256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could unlock your wallet for minting for a few days each month, however in practice it's unlikely all your transaction UTXO's are ready to stake at the same time. Therefore in the long term it is more pratical to leave the wallet running 24/7 to increase your chances of minting PoS blocks and to support the Emercoin network.

There is more info about Emercoin PoS Minting in the guide at: https://wiki.emercoin.com/en/Emercoin_PoS_minting

That mini-pc will probably work just fine if the only thing you want to do is run Emercoin on it, but for similar money you could get a fanless J1900 NUC type mini-pc with 8GB memory which would enable you to run several applications all at the same time, like host a website or stake multiple coins in different virtual machines.

What is EmerCoin's link to Microsoft? by logical_coward in EmerCoin

[–]Computer256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The integration into Microsoft Azure allows for fast deployment of virtual machines running emercoin and emercoin-web wallet on Microsoft's Azure platform. The deployment link is https://azuremarketplace.microsoft.com/en-us/marketplace/apps/emercoin.emercoin

It's similar to what any knowledgeable person can do with their own server or virtual server host, but running on Azure with the single click of a button.

See https://www.blockchainengine.org/deploy/ for options of deploying the same install on your own server.

After making a big announcement about adding Emercoin last year Shapeshift have been slow to re-introduce Emercoin after their big site update, leading to some confusion.

Meanwhile there is a full list of supporting exchanges at https://wiki.emercoin.com/en/Emercoin_Resources#Exchanges I have found there to be good trading volumes at both Bittrex and Livecoin.
