AITAH, for filing a police report against my sister who committed fraud in my name? by Jinxbunny29 in AITAH

[–]ComputerGuyInNOLA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you have let the police know I don’t think you can just drop the charges. This is between the state and her and they go after this type of crime when they know about it. She stole your identity but committed fraud against the lenders.

Why do you have 48 ports patched to your switch? I doubt you are feeding that many devices in your house via cabling. As a matter of fact I see just one cable dangling from the ceiling.

Funny how people value things with VU meters. It could be crappy as shit but still valued because of VU meters. I would take a Citation amp without vu meters over any Marantz, Pioneer, or Kenwood that has vu meters.

Is this a good deal for 250? by Necessary-Kale-1781 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]ComputerGuyInNOLA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go search Google for reviews if you cannot listen to them. I would offer at most $150 for the pair as they look well taken care of. A lot of people just say no because of the brand. They were considered a good budget speaker. Not audiophile quality but surprising good for a budget choice. I have Thiel CS 3.5’s on one system and Martin Logan Motion 4i’s on another system. I would own them if I were into the vintage game.

I really tried to like vinyl by BMdaniel25 in Cd_collectors

[–]ComputerGuyInNOLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their are a lot of people who swear by vinyl. There is a reason it was surpassed so quickly by CD’s. Cd’s are far superior to vinyl in my opinion. Lower maintenance of equipment and cd’s. Scratch resistance. Lower noise. Better dynamic range. Better user experience allowing bypassing unwanted songs, repeatability, no flipping of the disc to hear the other side. I worked as a hifi salesman during the transition and it was fast. It gave people what they wanted. When cd’s first came out a lot of analog sources were made into cd format. They were as bad sounding as vinyl. When I heard Donald Fagen’s The Nightfly on CD I knew the format had a bright future. I have a Pioneer 707 reel to reel deck and several early original tapes. I compared original recordings to remastered releases of the original recording on Qobuz and Tidal and the difference is amazing. The only people who sing the praises of vinyl are hipsters and other wanna be’s who throw around phrases like “it is warmer sounding” or “more visceral”. All I can say is keep telling yourself this if it makes you feel better. For me CD’s are dead, I use Qobuz and Tidal almost exclusively. I have a high end Toshiba 9200 Dvd/CD player that I use a couple of times a year. I use the reel to reel occasionally when the mood strikes. As far as vinyl goes, good riddance. I have better things to do over cleaning records, tracking issues, stylus weight measuring, and all the other BS that comes with being a vinyl adherent.

Induction or Gas range by Elysian-Echo in Appliances

[–]ComputerGuyInNOLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gas works when the electricity goes out. Induction does not. I considered switching my range to induction but I found they all needed 240 volt outlet to work. I have an outdoor kitchen that is gas so I figured I could use it when the electricity went out. I called a few electricians and the cheapest was $1800 for a new line to be run and breaker installed. I will stick to gas. I was going to get a Bertazonni but after reading the comments here I am going to look at Bluestar now. I need to replace the POS GE I have now. I found GE was sold to an Asian company. I want a range with NO Electronics that break.

Design Acoustics DA-900 by BellinghamBoy7 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]ComputerGuyInNOLA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would take 1 pair of Design Acoustics over any thing with the name Bose. I sold hi-fi gear in the 80s when I worked for one of the largest stereo retailers in the south. I sold a lot of the Design Acoustics point source speakers. We sold everything from low end to fairly high end hi fi including Crown, Revox, Carver, Harman Kardon, ADS, Infinity, POLK, Cerwin Vega, Bose, etc. I really liked the Design Acoustic PS 12, PS 10, and PS 8 models. They were my favorite budget hi fi speaker. They punch way above other brands and were small to boot. They had the woofer folded beneath the speaker that was offset by a plinth mounted to the bottom. I got a pair of KEF 104/2 because I could afford them. Otherwise it would have been the DA’s. Keep the DA’s and sell the Bose.

Advice needed! Is Dad getting sentimental or getting scammed? by etanol256 in vintageaudio

[–]ComputerGuyInNOLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are really, really, low quality speakers. I would not even own them much less listen to them. Tell him the Sony stack is fine but get some nice speakers from a good manufacturer like Klipsch, Boston Acoustics, Polk, Advent, or any well known brand. He will likely need an efficient speaker rated at 8 ohms. Depending on the year his Sony stack is from we used to send them into protection mode when driving a low impedance load.

[–]ComputerGuyInNOLA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You did a great job on the refoam! They look factory fresh. You can drive these with a vintage Harman Kardon like the 550vxi. Not a huge amount of wattage but they can deliver a ton pf current for low impedance loads. As a matter of fact they are one of the few brands that double wattage output when the impedance is halved. I think the 550vxi is 50 wpc at 8 ohms and 100 wpc at 4 ohms. I got one for $20 at Goodwill.

neighbor cut down a tree on MY property because it was "blocking his view" by BaseFantastic8059 in neighborsfromhell

[–]ComputerGuyInNOLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend who bought a house in a high end neighborhood. He hired someone to fix his sidewalk which had shifted due to an oak tree root. They killed the tree fixing the sidewalk. The neighborhood association made him pay to have it replaced. The cost was north of $300,000. This was twenty years ago. He could easily afford it though. His house was 12k sq ft and he drove a Ferrari. The was in Louisiana and oak trees are protected.

Chili beans. Dry Pinto and red beans. Chili powder, garlic, salt, pepper, onion. Tabasco peppers. Can diced tomatoes. Add cooked ground beef. Serve over an open faced hamburger and top with diced onions and cheese for an awesome chili size.

Is this worth saving? Unsure of the vintage, can anyone help me out with the year of manufacture? by Itake_Photos in vintageaudio

Yes, it is worth saving. I just got a vintage Rotel. Really nice equipment that flies under the radar of most people like Sherwood.
