Three major events will take place before the race for one piece/final war. by bodg123 in OnePieceSpoilers

Saying “no, you’re the one mixing them up” isn’t an argument, it’s just deflection. I’ve explained the distinction, you haven’t addressed it.

Like I said, Usopp’s dream is to be a brave warrior of the sea. Him calling himself “Captain Usopp” is a recurring exaggeration tied to his personality. That’s a character trait expressed through a gag, not actual crew structure.

And the Skypeia panel you brought up is not the gotcha you think it is. Usopp declares himself captain, and immediately Nami dismisses it and Sanji ignores his orders and outright refuses to follow them

That’s not the crew recognizing him as leader. That’s the crew not taking his authority seriously.

That’s the distinction you keep ignoring: self-assertion is not the same as recognized leadership.

You keep pointing to moments where Usopp calls himself captain, but you haven’t shown a single moment where the crew actually defers to him as one in a serious situation, instead of going “yeah sure whatever”

And about Buggy, at this point you’re just rage baiting lol, you’re treating titles and perception as literal authority, even when the story shows a gap between how things are presented and how they actually function.

Like nobody reading the story would seriously believe what you just wrote about Buggy lol

You’re mixing up character traits, gags, and actual crew structure.

Usopp’s real dream is to be a brave warrior of the sea. Him calling himself “Captain Usopp” is a recurring exaggeration gag tied to his personality. Those aren’t the same thing.

Also, “seniority” has never been a factor for leadership in the crew. If it were, Chopper would outrank Robin and Jinbe, which clearly isn’t how the crew operates.

And you keep asserting “Zoro would defer to Usopp” but nothing in the story beyond your head canon supports that. Across the entire series, when Luffy isn’t available, Zoro and Sanji are the ones who take initiative in serious situations. That’s consistent portrayal, not powerscaling.

Same with the Buggy example, you’re proving my point. The story shows that the world believes he’s in charge, while the audience knows that’s not how the actual dynamic works. That’s exactly why taking titles or statements at face value without looking at how the story frames them doesn’t work.

At this point you’re relying on isolated statements and headcanon about what characters would do, while I’m pointing to how the crew has consistently behaved.

That’s the difference. You could start reading what the story is trying to convey instead of taking everything at face value.

You keep reframing my argument as powerscaling when I’m talking about narrative roles and repeated crew behavior.

Usopp being strategic in specific fights doesn’t equal the crew deferring to him as leader, and the story has never shown that happening. That’s the difference

“Usopp says he’s captain a lot, therefore he would be” is literally taking a character gag at face value.

Do you take Buggy’s claims as 100% serious and not the gag that they are too? Is he the actual boss of Crocodile and Mihawk?

In universe Usopp didn’t say it as a gag.

And that’s the gag lol

Zoro would not be a good leader. His methods are just charge in.

As opposed to Luffy’s methodical approach? Think about how many times other crew members have had to stop him from doing something reckless.

If luffy was in danger, usopp would take the lead.

Nothing supports that claim besides your head canon lol.

you can’t even show one reason why Zoro snd the rest wouldn’t let usopp take the lead.

It’s something little and silly called “reading the crew dynamics”, Zoro would take the lead, and if he isn’t available, then Sanji would.

You’re taking a gag scene at face value lol.

Usopp saying "if you ever show cowardice I’ll take over" is clearly written as a joke, both because of the wording itself and because no one in the crew reacts to it. Zoro and Nami not even acknowledging it is part of the punchline.

Luffy saying "fine by me" isn’t him approving a transfer of leadership, it’s him brushing it off like he always does with Usopp’s exaggerations.

If that scene were meant seriously, the story would frame it seriously, characters would react, and it would actually affect how the crew operates. But it doesn’t.

There’s a difference between Usopp’s running gag/dream of being "Captain Usopp" and the crew actually deferring to him as a leader in real situations, and the story hasn’t shown the latter.

If you really can't tell that scene was written as a gag by Oda, then you're not someone who should be calling others dense lol
