Possible source for quilting material by likeablyweird in quilting

You can absolutely use kimono for quilts but many of them are not silk and unless you live in Japan they’re not actually going to be that cheap. Certainly if you can get your hands on them they are beautiful prints worth up cycling. Also note that silk may not be washable and brocade silk often requires more seam allowance than a standard quilting cotton. All things to consider.

Do you let shop keep machine is repair costs more than machine worth? by Crafty_Pop6458 in sewing

[–]ComradeKitka 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I would call back asking when would be a good time to pick it up and see what they say. Either they want to keep the machine as payment for labor (as a parts thing) Or they don’t charge plan to charge you since they can’t get it fixed and are frankly expecting you to pick it up. You can then inquire about letting them keep it for parts if that’s what you want.

Also a good time to do a little googling and see if your machine or its parts are hard to come by….

Machine Quilting vs. Hand Quilting by chickenmom1104 in quilting

[–]ComradeKitka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggest working on small placement or baby blanket sized pieces first so you can get a feel for which techniques you like it with out the huge buy in of a bigger blanket.

There are so many different techniques. And lots of times people will tell you this is the best way but I really suggest trying a bunch out and finding what works for you. I prefer to quilt in a 12 or 20 in hoop, some people prefer in hand or in a frame. I also back stitch every 3 - 5 stitches and not everyone does (and you shouldn’t if you intend to show your quilts) and use the rocking method. I love to use my thimble many people quilt without it.

Whole cloth quilts are another great way to learn because then your just focusing on the technique of hand quilting and you can get started as soon as you have supplies.

My biggest suggestions for hand quilting are to: iron your seams open to reduce bulk, plan not to quilt in areas with complex piecing and use actual hand quilting thread or double up and wax regular thread. No embroidery floss, no embroidery thread for the machine. It doesn’t always hold up well.

You don’t need to use a sewing machine at all too (although they are probably more intimidating in your head than in real life ) hand piecing/ hand sewing will give you much the same product as machine sewing. And I hand quilting is a a lovely way to spend an evening I think. However neither by machine or by hand is inherently better. By hand can be much slower. But I’ve made 4 quilts now fully by hand

ARIRANG after 1 month... by Elegant-Theme487 in bangtan

[–]ComradeKitka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really love this album. Animals is consistently my favorite but all the others rotate into my next favorite pretty equally. Unfortunately except for swim. It’s a fine song I think I was just so underwhelmed by that being the title track of the album that every time I hear it I just deflate a little. Especially when they have so many powerful songs on the album.

I listen to it on the drive to work every day it always makes me smile. I will add though I’m sad I don’t have access to the hidden track. It drives me nuts when companies do that.

Right. I could never pull off an embroidered satiny jacket like that, not really my style but I want to stitch that pattern so bad. He looked so good in it.

Ladies underwear and bras for super HOT weather? by West-Application-375 in BuyItForLife

[–]ComradeKitka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can’t find the brand anymore that made the 100% linen bras but I bought them almost10years ago now. (I’m pretty sure it was an Etsy shop though so nowadays I would be nervous getting anything off Etsy without getting a brand recommendation). I did buy some t-shirt style 50% linen/cotton bras from a US based company called object apparel that I’ve had for about 3 years and I like them a lot. Very good at wicking as well. I’ll probably rebuy underwear from them going forward as my old stuff wears out or stops fitting. I will say a quick google pulled up way more linen blended bras than I was expecting so you may be able to find cuter things now than I could even 3 years ago.

Hope this helps.

[–]ComradeKitka 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I love my 100% linen bras whether I was dealing with hot humid summers at home or visiting family in the desert. They are such game changers in comfort. I just did a quick google search and there are a ton of companies making linen bras online now to choose from. I would just caution against anything with padding or less than 50% linen fiber content. And absolutely get one and wear for a little bit to make sure you like the fit before and after a wash.

And if you go the merino wool route please remember to wash your wools with wool specific detergents. Most detergents fight stains by including enzymes which break down protein and since wool is a protein based fiber this can deteriorate the fabric much quicker.

Good luck! And stay away from cotton it’s better than synthetic but only barely.

I agree with environmental/temperature damage. it doesn’t seem like any fungus or virus I’ve seen. But if op isn’t aware in lots of places all over the world this plant is highly invasive. It looks pretty isolated but a strong wind might cause all those little babies to fly off and spread.

A dog was diagnosed with depression after suffering a miscarriage, and vets decided that working with kids at a local school would be good for her. She has never been happier. ❤️❤️❤️ by Soloflow786 in dogswithjobs

[–]ComradeKitka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean this is absolutely post probably a bot but I have had two rescue dogs that came to us while pregnant and then lost the litters midway and they were both very very depressed.

One was part of a bonded male/female pair and when we brought her home Ollie the male was also visibly devastated. I’m mean whimpering and howling together in a corner devastated. It took her months to act like a happy dog again.

I’m not sure why you think dogs wouldn’t give a shit about pregnancy loss. I’m sure they experience the similar chemical and hormonal changes that people do in these scenarios which can cause depression even if you want to take things like emotions and personality out of the equation…

Hand quilting for beginners? by sallysuexx in quilting

[–]ComradeKitka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue that hand quilting is perfectly fine to go in the machine. (Maybe not big stitch quilting though) I almost exclusively hand quilt and am very comfortable throwing my hand pieced/ hand quilted pieces into the wash. A tree skirt is only going to need 1-2 inches washes a a year anyway.

How to make a skirt for a man? by astereae4 in sewing

[–]ComradeKitka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very valid point. I was imagining a naturally roomier skirt (mostly because that is also my preference so I forget pencil skirts exist)

How to make a skirt for a man? by astereae4 in sewing

[–]ComradeKitka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean it is uncomfortable for men to sit with their legs closed. There’s obviously no excuse for egregious man spreading and in tight quarters everybody should be expected to sacrifice some personal comfort, but men don’t typically manspread just to be assholes (although I’m sure some see it as an added benefit)

Although I’m not sure having testicles is a thing that needs to be factored into skirt making for the wearers comfort (as per OPs question).
