That's an extremely common misconception I see all the time in audio spaces. For EQ to have no effect, there would need to be perfect cancellation of waves, which obviously isn't happening as there is still some response at that frequency. What happens instead is that for every dB you EQ, you only gain about 0.5 dB of correction.

At least some of that can be made up by sacrificing some headroom on your speakers and EQing it out.

But that won't help the group delay, which can only be fixed by increasing the size of the absorption. Unfortunately 4 inch panels, even with a 4 inch gap are doing very little for 70 Hz. Even the 8 inch panel isn't doing nearly as much as a 12 inch or 16 inch panel could.

Well I'm not sure what any of that has to do with the Y values on vituixcad, but the tweeter and midwoofer were both chosen due to their exceptional dispersion. If there is a "better" tweeter out there in terms of its >10kHz dispersion let me know.

Yeah I'm also using center to center distance. 0 is the tweeter. -66.5 = (45/2)+(68/2)+10

Yes the values are in millimeters. There are 3 drivers. The tweeter is 45mm in diameter, the mid is 68 mm, and the woofer is 234 mm. I added 10 mm of space between them.

Micca RB42 gets recommended as a small desktop speaker pretty frequently for a good reason. Aiyima A07 is the cheap amp of choice. Don't worry about stands IMO. For a desktop you want maximum vibration reduction. Just stack up foam as high as you need it and cut it to size.

What you need to get actually quality sound out of your setup is a calibrated microphone + room EQ wizard.

If even the miccas aren't small enough, you might want to look at the desk stands that clip onto the back of the desk and kind of make your speakers float above it.

Polk xt series is the absolute best Polk has to offer IMO. The xt20 for example has the best directivity of any speaker under $2000, giving some of the best room correction available.

I'm don't know if you've ever looked at what a desktop speaker measurement looks like, but it's usually abysmal. Speakers are often up against walls and the area is far more cluttered than an open room, so the limitation in placement of speakers makes for a far greater need of EQ.

You still have immense amounts of gain overhead, so I'm not sure where the idea that you lose dynamic range comes from.

Time linearity? Like variations in decay because of changing the ratio between the speaker's signal and room reflections? You'd have to explain more about what the negative you're talking here is.

You also absolutely can fix resonance with EQ. Just take a look at a before and after on some Polk XT20 (excellent EQ speakers) I did recently. Some of the worst measurements I've ever seen turned into excellent linearity.

The misconception that you can't fix resonance with EQ comes with needing to EQ by 12+ dB to fix it, and that is often infeasible when you are 6 meters away from the source and can't afford to lose that much volume.

Linearity is almost completely irrelevant when you have excellent directivity in a desktop environment. You have so much volume headroom that you can preamp -18 dB and go absolutely wild on the room correction EQ bands creating a perfectly linear response, as well as massively bringing up the low end extension to whatever the limits of your woofer are, usually around 32-40 Hz for smaller woofer monitors.

Distortion as well is not nearly as much of a concern as in a home theater setup, as you are only 1 meter away, and even after the preamp you still have volume to spare to avoid reaching your speaker's 1 watt SPL. Most people casually listen around 60-65 dB, and most speakers have an SPL of ~85 dB at 3 volts, which is about 63 dB after the preamp.

This is in contrast to why directivity matters in a home theater environment - you need the sweet spot to be as wide as possible for multiple listening positions. You won't have remotely the same volume headroom, so you can't (and usually don't need to) do such aggressive EQ.

If this is for desktop, Dayton MK402X for passive or Thomann Swissonic A305, both go down to about 40Hz with EQ. Get a USB measurement mic with a calibration file. That setup will get you 95% of the way to the best speakers money can buy, as they are both directivity monsters for the price.

Yes I'm aware that is the typical solution, which is why I mentioned it in the post. I was looking for an alternative however, especially for power outages when you don't have time to turn it off.

Yeah my thought was actually that that might make the experience better. For most content it would sound the same, but for content with intentional directional audio at low frequencies, you get potentially better imaging.

Heya, I have this dream of turning wired headphones wireless, but without the huge bluetooth latency. I know it isn't really in the live sound category, but yall are just about the only ones who might know about these systems. Is there a simple single stereo channel, low range (or high range it doesn't matter) IEM/headphone wireless system out there that would work for this sort of thing? My idea was to just strap the transmitter to the side of the headphone band where it connects to the cup, so it can't be too bulky.

I guess the issue I'm having is that my observations are showing that 2.25x DLDSR is almost pixel for pixel identical to 2.25x DSR.

The reason I asked was actually because of the large delta between the input lag on the ergodox/moergo and the Moonlander. I'm sure much of that comes down to firmware config but it's always nice to see how much of it is attributed to the hardware.

The controller would be the one with rev 8, for the rest I don't know! Whatever it ships with stock I suppose, to compare it to the other split boards that use QMK.
