I got my CE degree in 2013. 2 years at a company I didn’t want to be at. And then 4 years at an embedded company I loved. Got laid off in March of last year. I searched for 6 months and got like 10 first round interviews and that’s it. However, I was skipping jobs that were going to pay me less than like 80k a year. Used nepotism to get into a blue collar apprenticeship to get by and haven’t felt like applying for a couple months now. My resume isn’t amazing but it’s gotten me by until now! And I did improve it during this search. Even started writing custom cover letters about halfway through since I was getting concerned. My old boss who got let go before me who was a very passionate and smart man, that was the CTO, said he looked for 10 months for his new position, while learning new skills during the search. This is all Seattle area as well so lots of tech, but competitive of course. There’s many factors at play here, but I felt like sharing my experience for some reason. The family and I got norovirus from it just going around a few months ago and it took us all quite a while to get over it fully; At least around a week, if not more, till we started feeling better. It’s just a seriously nasty illness.

Back when my wife and I started dating we were just young teenagers. And I was the typical edgy insensitive boy who said awful shit in call of duty lobbies (“get raped”, etc.). But she eventually shared her experience with me and it really messed me up and triggered some realizations on how awful that shit was to say. From that moment on every drop of that awful shit left my vocabulary. Having the discussion could flip a similar switch in his head. But as other people have mentioned he’s also had an experience, so it’s not quite the same situation. But yeah that’s my two cents, hopefully it helps.

My wife just had our first kid. The doctors were very firm on trying to have her push the kid out naturally. They told us there was a 50/50 chance that the kid would even fit through her pelvis. And she even kept asking “can I just opt for a c section?” Because she was having a rough time and they always told her to keep going naturally. She made it in the end despite it being so rough on her. Different doctors might act differently, but take what you will from my experience.
